Miguel Cabrera will be DH for second straight game; Jeff Baker to start at third.
Manager Jim Leyland said Friday night that it was "very questionable" that Miguel Cabrera would be able to play third base tonight due to his ankle injuries.
He was right.
Cabrera will be in the starting lineup as the designated hitter for the second consecutive game tonight when the Detroit Tigers play the Los Angeles Angels in the second game of a three-game series.
Cabrera homered and doubled for two of his team's five hits Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the Angels, but he was clearly affected by his injured right ankle, which forced him to leave the game Thursday in the second inning.
Drew Smyly (4-3, 4.42 ERA) will make his first start for the Tigers since July 6. He is starting in place of Doug Fister, who is battling a groin strain. Smyly made 15 starts for the Tigers earlier this season, but he has never faced the Angels.
Dan Haren (8-10, 4.90 ERA) will start for the Angels. Current members of the Tigers are hitting .221 (25-for-113) with a .516 OPS against Haren. Omar Infante is 6-for-12 with six singles against Haren, while Cabrera has the only home run a current Tigers player has against Haren. Cabrera is 3-for-13 (.231) against the right-hander.
With Cabrera at designated hitter, Tigers manager Jim Leyland has Delmon Young in left field for the second consecutive game. Andy Dirks will start in right field in place of Brennan Boesch. Jeff Baker will start at third base.
