Miguel Cabrera will be DH for second straight game; Jeff Baker to start at third.
Manager Jim Leyland said Friday night that it was "very questionable" that Miguel Cabrera would be able to play third base tonight due to his ankle injuries.
He was right.
Cabrera will be in the starting lineup as the designated hitter for the second consecutive game tonight when the Detroit Tigers play the Los Angeles Angels in the second game of a three-game series.
Cabrera homered and doubled for two of his team's five hits Friday night in a 2-1 loss to the Angels, but he was clearly affected by his injured right ankle, which forced him to leave the game Thursday in the second inning.
Drew Smyly (4-3, 4.42 ERA) will make his first start for the Tigers since July 6. He is starting in place of Doug Fister, who is battling a groin strain. Smyly made 15 starts for the Tigers earlier this season, but he has never faced the Angels.
Dan Haren (8-10, 4.90 ERA) will start for the Angels. Current members of the Tigers are hitting .221 (25-for-113) with a .516 OPS against Haren. Omar Infante is 6-for-12 with six singles against Haren, while Cabrera has the only home run a current Tigers player has against Haren. Cabrera is 3-for-13 (.231) against the right-hander.
With Cabrera at designated hitter, Tigers manager Jim Leyland has Delmon Young in left field for the second consecutive game. Andy Dirks will start in right field in place of Brennan Boesch. Jeff Baker will start at third base.

Leyland: "I doubt very much whether Cabrera will play 3rd base before Kansas City [series next week."

Leyland said unlikely he'd pinch run for Cabrera in 7th but might later.

Because Tigers can't play Cabrera in field right now, Boesch not playing tonight, and Young off tomorrow.

Reason behind Delmon (and Baker) playing today vs. Haren: RHH are hitting nearly 100 points higher (.337 to .240) than LHH.

Everybody but Villarreal available out of Tigers bullpen tonight. Bullpen is short an arm after Putkonen sent down.

Haren has been somewhat crummy this year, hopefully tonight he leaves a few mistakes up over the plate and we can get good wood on them.

These 5-8 hit, 1-2 run [Tiger offense] games have to stop, I can;t believe I'm actually hoping Raburn comes back soon.

As much as I dislike him, I wonder if the Tigers would offer Torii Hunter a couple year contract this off-season?

37, but still plays good D, runs well, and gets on base pretty good. His power numbers might suck in Comerica though.

haren getting the outside corner or just off it from home plate ump gary darling.

oh and this bit of good news.... Ryan Raburn homers for MudHens in bottom 1st ... his 4th this season.

Its also his 4th HR in the last 5 games. He will be up here sucking soon enough.

Prince will get the first Tiger Hit right here.

Dirks will get the fist RBI.

Seriously, who coaches base-running and lets this shit go on?

It's not like this is the first terrible slide we have seen Prince do...

Prince drills down right field line, but sliding isn't Prince's forte, too bad, Delmon with a double same place.

Wow, Delmon giving me a chance to be right about Dirks too....

He overran the bag, that's a mistake. The fact his name is Prince fielder does not absolve him of that.

He's not a good slider, and whoever coaches that [Lamont? :hmm:] should have been working with him.
