Gameday from mlb.com

Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup. Gerald Laird gets the start behind the plate. No update yet on Avila’s status.
Meanwhile, after the buzz surrounding Brennan Boesch’s ill-fated start over Andy Dirks on Monday, he’s out of the lineup tonight. Quintin Berry starts in left and bats second. Andy Dirks moves over to right and bats sixth, where Boesch normally would be batting.

Leyland said Dotel and Alburquerque not available tonight, rest of bullpen fine.

Max Scherzer looks to add to strikeout total; Quintin Berry in for Brennan Boesch.
Max Scherzer has been racking up the strikeouts this season. If history is any indication, Scherzer could tack on several more strikeouts Tuesday night when he faces the Oakland A's.
Scherzer has recorded 31 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched in three career starts against the Oakland A's. That's an average of 16.41 strikeouts per nine innings. He is averaging 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings this season and 9.3 per nine innings for his career.
Scherzer leads the majors with 220 strikeouts. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings May 10 in a 10-6 win over the A's. He struck out nine in that game.
The A's lead the majors in strikeouts with 1,232 this season. That is 225 times more than Tigers hitters have struck out.
The A's are the hottest team in baseball. They have won 22 of their past 29 games and have the second-best record in the American League. They will start rookie A.J. Griffin (6-0, 1.94 ERA).
Quintin Berry will start in left field and Andy Dirks in right field. Brennan Boesch, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Monday in a 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox, is not in the starting lineup.
Alex Avila is not in the lineup. He was unavailable for the game Monday after he was hurt in a collision with Prince Fielder during the game Sunday in Cleveland.
from Mlive

Alex Avila misses second straight game.
Catcher Alex Avila is still out of the Tigers lineup, following his collision with first baseman Prince Fielder on Sunday in Cleveland.
Avila suffered a sprained jaw and left the game, and did not play in Monday's makeup game in Chicago. The Tigers say Avila did not suffer a concussion when he collided with Fielder as they converged on a foul popup.
Gerald Laird will start behind the plate Tuesday night as the Tigers open a three-game series against Oakland at Comerica Park. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

I have to say that I am not excited about this game. After Valverde blew the game on Sunday and the defense blew it yesterday.

I guess our only hope is the White Sox get beat up by LAA this weekend and TB to end the season.

Well at least we will have better OF defense with a flyball pitcher on the mound than we're used to.

And I know lately they have played well, but Oakland's lineup does not scare me in the least, especially with Max on the hill.

Don't discount KC, Soxs haven't won many games in KC this year. Tigers need to sweep Oak first and foremost to remain with any shot though IMO. In some ways it's kinda easier to watch em now cuz I don't expect them to do shit anymore.

A.J. Griffin 6-0 1.93 LOL yeah good luck offense. then again team has a knack for hitting good pitchers while not hitting bad ones so who knows we'll see...

Okay Max, that was your shaky inning.

From here on out it's blue-eye and strikeouts.

Max pitching 1st inning,

crisp changeup strikes out swinging,

smith changeup popped up to Berry in left,

One of the strikeouts was the 800th by a Tigers 'starting pitcher' in 2012 -- 2nd time starters have had 800+ Ks since '21 (830 in 1968).

reddick line drive single to center,

cespedes walks,

gerry meals home plate ump,

moss ground ball single to right, run scores,

all with 2 outs,

20th pitch coming up,

drew strikes out swinging,

Blue Eye Max strikes out two batters, brown eye max gives up rbi single,

23 pitches.

Most all of Max's pitches that were fastballs couple at 90, most 92/93/ and a couple at 94

Tigers 1st inning,

Jackson lines back to the pitcher in and out of his glove, single,

Berry with a ground ball single to right, Jackson to third,

Cabrera swings and misses a 88, swings and misses a 69 curve, throwing slop, curve in the dirt, ground foul, fly to right center, Jackson tags up and scores sac fly,

tie game,

Prince waits throw to first, popped up to second,

Young fly to center,

13 pitches.

Way to fizzle a inning guys.. Man Prince is struggling... And both hack at the first pitch...

freaking crazy

First and third and no outs and the freaking tigers only get 1 fucking run... Pathetic..

Cabrera now has 37 RBI in 39 games vs. OAK during his career. Hitting .348 (48x138) with 11 HR vs. club.

Small sample size, I know, but that makes 4-for-10 for Quintin Berry since he started Saturday in Cleveland. Before that, Berry was 4-for-30 since Aug. 4.

JV's on E60 tonight. Just showed the Don Kelly "hot foot". Too bad the fire didn't spread...

Come on Max.

Don't nibble, the Umps not giving you the corners.

Scherzer pitching second inning,

donaldson slider strikes out swinging,

kotteras changeup strikes out swinging, toh pezzis malaka....

pennington 2 and 2, jerry meals trying to give a's batter life, strike is called a ball, now a walk,

f'n ump's strike zone is tighter than a cows ass during horse fly season,

crisp line drive to Infante and he holds onto it,

Max with 44 pitches,

Wow.

Peralta carried the warning track!

2-1 good guys.

"Game over" LOL
