Mize is more raw than the hype surrounding him in his first season in the minors indicated. But Skubal I think can improve @ the Major League level, not needing to be sent back to the minors for more seasoning. Casey got a rude awakening if he had any ideas about coming up and dominating ML hitters, so its good that he knows now that he will have to work on improving his repertoire of secondary pitches during the rest of the season and overwinter-spring.
Avila should have signed another innings-eater vet SP, especially given the pandemic and only having acquired the ILed Nova. Unfortunately former trade-bait worthy SP Boyd has continued his regression from '18 and first half '19.
Its a tribute to the Tigers piss-poor pitcher development that there is good reason for concern in Mize becoming ready for prime time in '21, but instead maybe '22.
Checkout Verlander's 2 starts in '05. And remember ml players weren't playing they were doing nothing. Mize hadn't pitched in some time before being called up. Not like he went from ST games to ML games or minor league games to ML games. He went from sitting on couch to ML games.
I don't think anyone is saying that he won't be good...just saying he isn't good now.
BTW, they aren't just sitting on the couch. They are working out every day in Toledo. Practicing, working out, and playing "simulated" games. I know it's not the same, but they should be in shape and ready to go.
