Tigers - cubs Game Preview.

Detroit Tigers' Jhonny Peralta returns from paternity leave, Max Scherzer takes mound against lowly Chicago Cubs.
If the Detroit Tigers want to remain competitive in the AL Central, the three-game series against the lowly Chicago Cubs could be just what the doctor ordered.
A must-win series? Nah, it's too early to call it that, but the Cubs are losers of 20 of 25 and are returning from a 10-game road trip in which they went 2-8.
It's not must-win, but it's a series they certainly should win.
The Tigers are coming off two straight wins and enter this interleague series with their power arms, Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer, all slated to start.
Tonight, Detroit will send Scherzer to the bump as he tries to rebound from his last start in which he gave up a season-high eight runs over 4 1/3 innings in a 9-6 loss to Cleveland.
The Cubs will counter with left-hander Paul Maholm, who is looking to end a three-game losing streak after lasting four innings in an 8-0 loss to Milwaukee last Wednesday.
Manager Jim Leyland is notorious for saying there's no easy win in the majors, but Detroit isn't scheduled to face Ryan Dempster, making the club's challenge significantly less difficult.
If they had a shot at inching closer to the .500 mark, this series could be their golden ticket.
Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta returns to the lineup Tuesday, three days after the Tigers placed him on the paternity list. Peralta's wife, Molly, gave birth to twin girls Saturday. Their names are Gabriela Rose and Laina Katherine.
He will bat sixth and hit in front of Gerald Laird, who is batting seventh for the fourth straight game. Danny Worth gets the start at second and will bat eighth.

Boesch fine - definitely playing tonight, he said.

Valverde: "I did not spit on the ball (Sunday night), that's illegal. I was wiping away sweat."

outfield at Wrigley looks terrible because of recent concerts - "doesn't just look terrible," said Tigers Boesch, "it's a mess out there."

Roger Waters crashes plane at Wrigley Field, providing great metaphor for Cubs season.

Theo confirms Cubs ready to start moving players to improve the organization's future.

Paul Maholm Career VS Tigers: 0-1, 2.38 ERA, 1.676 WHIP, 5BB / 7K, .311 BAA, .795 OPSA, 14 hits in 11.2 IP (2 starts).

and with Tigers position players and pitchers bunting problems at least this hasn't happened.....LHP Brian Matusz bunted a ball off his nose during pitcher batting practice today. Severity unknown at the moment. He was swollen & bloodied.

Damn, Maholm has dominated Prince, hopefully that changes tonight.

I think the team needs to get away from the Young/Boesch outfield combo, but I guess the feeling is Scherzer will give up 5 or 6 anyway, so we need the offense.

I think we can agree that getting anything less than a sweep will be a disappointment. If they're going to have any chance at anything they NEED to beat up on lowly teams.

This is like getting an extra three games against the Twins. The Cubs are that bad, although much better at home.

Jackson lines out to left,

Boesch chases low and away,

Cabrera 3 and 1 swings and misses low full count, again chasing low,

maholm 14 pitches.

Just one time this year I'd like to see us pepper the hell out of a starting pitcher with an ERA over 5.

2 out of 3 for sure but you are right I will be pissed if we don't sweep...

2 of 3 IMO.

A sweep on the road against a team you probably have very little advanced scouting of is a tough call, even if it's the Cubs.

Another close play at first, nice play by Fielder and flip to Max covering,

Soriano has been red hot. Can't throw him any meatballs this series.

geezus this bastard dejesus still killing Tigers pitching now as a cub,
