DETROIT -- Catcher Alex Avila has been scratched from the Game 4 starting lineup for the Detroit Tigers due to right forearm soreness.
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Avila took a foul ball on his arm between his elbow and his wrist in Game 1. Avila played Saturday night in Game 3.
Leyland said he was unsure how the injury would affect Avila should the Tigers win Game 4 tonight to extend the World Series. The Tigers trail three games to none.
"Alex is very tough," Leyland said. "Without question, one of the toughest I've ever managed. If it's hurting, it's hurting. But I would have to talk to our medical team about that before … I don't want to make any silly statements right now about that because I don't know the answer."
Gerald Laird will replace Avila in the lineup and will bat ninth. Second baseman Omar Infante will move up from the ninth spot to the eighth spot in the lineup.
"I'm not sure about pinch-hitting," Leyland said. "I'd probably run him in there to catch if I had to. But just as far as I know, the trainer told me just a little bit ago it's probably best not to go with him."
Avila is hitting .207 (6-for-29) with one RBI and 12 strikeouts in the postseason. Laird, who started in Game 2 against left-hander Madison Bumgarner, is hitting .063 (1-for-16) with five strikeouts.
