DETROIT -- Catcher Alex Avila has been scratched from the Game 4 starting lineup for the Detroit Tigers due to right forearm soreness.
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Avila took a foul ball on his arm between his elbow and his wrist in Game 1. Avila played Saturday night in Game 3.
Leyland said he was unsure how the injury would affect Avila should the Tigers win Game 4 tonight to extend the World Series. The Tigers trail three games to none.
"Alex is very tough," Leyland said. "Without question, one of the toughest I've ever managed. If it's hurting, it's hurting. But I would have to talk to our medical team about that before … I don't want to make any silly statements right now about that because I don't know the answer."
Gerald Laird will replace Avila in the lineup and will bat ninth. Second baseman Omar Infante will move up from the ninth spot to the eighth spot in the lineup.
"I'm not sure about pinch-hitting," Leyland said. "I'd probably run him in there to catch if I had to. But just as far as I know, the trainer told me just a little bit ago it's probably best not to go with him."
Avila is hitting .207 (6-for-29) with one RBI and 12 strikeouts in the postseason. Laird, who started in Game 2 against left-hander Madison Bumgarner, is hitting .063 (1-for-16) with five strikeouts.

Leyland on Avila: "I could probably run him in there to catch, if I needed to. Not sure about pinch hitting.

Leyland: "I don't want to go naked with a catcher back there ... so I figured I'd just scratch him."

Meaning of "going naked": Leyland didn't want to play Avila, then have to pull him out, replace w/ Laird. If Laird were to get hurt ...

Leyland said the trainers recommended not playing Avila today.

Leyland said he'd discuss Avila's future availability for World Series after Game 4 ... if it was relevant, obviously.

Leyland on relationship with Dombrowski: "I don't think we've had a fight since 2007. ... That's pretty good."

Leyland: "I could paint a rosy picture, but it's not rosy right now. ... We've gotta figure out a way to win a game."

Leyland said he'd check into the fact that Miguel Cabrera did not speak with media after Game 3. Didn't want to comment more until he did.

I'm torn. As much as I'd like to have at least one win I almost want this misery to end.

I wish it was game three, as the thread title suggests. And the Tigers have not lost a WS at home for 78 years.

Oh Shit, my mistake.
I don't know how to edit the Title, anyone know if it is possible?
nvm, I learned something new.

This 'Hurricane Sandy' has started here this afternoon.

It's a 1000 miles wide, started hitting New Jersey and will hit here overnight and into Monday. 60-80 mph winds. Like last year with hurricane irene we could lose power again.
Anyone else along the Atlantic coast line into New England going to deal with this?

My sister just moved to Peabody, or near there (west of Boston) about 3 weeks ago. She is really nervous about it.

Really? That's north of the city (Boston). They have had flooding in the past in Peabody center, either rain storms or from snow melt.
If you are ever out to visit her, let me know, we can meet for lunch at the Hilltop or some other restaurant near there.
