Max Scherzer aims to stay hot as Tigers try to stretch winning streak to seven.
Max Scherzer's ERA has been falling for most of the season. But he has been especially effective for the past month or so.
Scherzer will try to keep that hot streak going this afternoon when the Detroit Tigers play the second game of their three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.
Scherzer is 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA in his past five outings, which have all been quality starts. Scherzer struck out 41 in 33 innings in those five starts and has seen his ERA fall from 5.88 to 4.72 during that stretch.
Scherzer is 2-1 with a 4.05 ERA in three career starts against the Orioles. Jim Thome is 6-for-13 with a home run in his career against Scherzer, while Adam Jones is 5-for-9.
No current Tigers hitter has ever faced left-hander Wei-Yin Chen, who will start today for the Orioles.
Ramon Santiago is starting at second and hitting second against the left-hander, with Ryan Raburn starting in right field in place of Brennan Boesch. Quintin Berry is starting in left field and batting ninth.
