Tigers vs. orioles Game Thread June 17

There was a prominent commentator who picked Max Scherzer to win the Cy Young this year before the season started, anyone remember who?

Max Scherzer becomes the first Tigers starter since George Mullin in 1909 to start the season 10-0.

Jhonny was behind them even before the story broke that suspensions were possible.

Hardy plays on the east coast, densest population in the country.

Andrus is a big name.

Peralta is hurt by the fact we (Detroit) are not a huge market, which is also why this will be the first time ever Cabrera was named as a starter in the AS game.

Nobody votes value anyways.
Which is why I still think the fans shouldn't vote for starters. Vote them on the team fine, but let the players/managers decide the starters. Especially when you see Hall of fame voters use AS starts and appearances as measuring sticks of being voted into the HOF. Which I think is also retarded.

Tigers Win 5 - 1
Scherzer 10th Straight Win
Cabrera w/ Homerun 3 Hits
Infante 4 Hits, Jackson 3 Hits
Smyly w/3 inning Save

My guess is they are going to stretch him out....give him chances to get some higher pitch counts just in case he needs to become the 5th starter.

I've always been a fan of leaving a bull pen guy in for more than 1 inning. Maybe 3 is pushing it for most but 2 seems very doable. Sadly 1 is usually all someone gets. I've always thought the more guys you bring into the game the more likely it is that one of those pitchers is going to be off that night. The game is so specialized now.

Kansas City holds on to beat Cleveland 2-1 tigers pick up half game on the night

+5

Leyland said they will mix-and-match for the closer role right now. It will NOT be Rick Porcello. They aren't going to change the rotation.

Agreed. I'm fine with leading the retards vote in the starters, i don't watch the all-star game anyways, but the problem is the value placed on it during HOF voting.

Of course, the HOF voting process itself is a joke, because somehow going to journalism school qualifies somebody to analyze baseball.

Smoker sez...Stop asking porcello about being the closer he's not going to close ya bunch of jack wagons!

This is the tigers best pitching staff since 68

What's interesting is that the Tigers' '13 Team ERA of 3.47 would have been next to last in '68 in the AL. I think the starters are better in 13 as a unit and the relievers are better as a unit in 68.

Go by era+

Hell the way Porcello has been pitching lately who the hell in their right mind would want us to move him to the closer role? lmao

Now Smyly on the other hand I would love to see get a chance at closing games but that probably won't happen at least for now.

Go by era+

ERA+ ▾ -- ERA+
100*[lgERA/ERA]
Adjusted to the player’s ballpark(s)

1968 = 100*(2.98/2.71) comes to 110 modified for park to 111 (+1)
Worst AL ERA = 3.64

1984 = 100*(3.99/3.49) comes to 114 modified for park to 113 (-1)
Worst AL ERA = 4.48

2006 = 100*(4.56/3.84) comes to 119 modified for park to 118 (-1)
Worst AL ERA = 5.65

2013 = 100*(4.02/3.47) comes to 116 modified for park to 122 (+6)
Worst AL ERA = 4.75

The issue is and always will be the calculated park factor. Tiger Stadium was a hitter's park. So the pitching should have received more than a point of increase or decrease. Comerica is actually park neutral and 2006 accurately reflects that.

OPS + and ERA + are both somewhat flawed stats and should not be used to compare different eras.
