Miguel Cabrera happy to be playing Texas.. He has a .424 BA (25-59) vs Rangers since 2011 with 2+ hits in 11 of 14 games.
Benoit and Villarreal unavailable for tonight's game.
Avila back in lineup after all the precautions, test, MRI, but expect he might play less.
Detroit Tigers' Alex Avila returns to lineup; Drew Smyly activated, set to start vs. Texas Rangers.
Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila is battling a bout of severe tendinitis in his left knee.
But it's not keeping him from playing.
Avila is back in the lineup Tuesday night after missing the series opener Monday with an aching left knee that Tigers manager Jim Leyland initially labeled as concerning.
Worried that his sore knee could sustain further damage if he continued to play, Avila underwent an MRI early Monday, which revealed no structural damage.
He was cleared to play by Texas Rangers team doctors and Avila declared himself available Tuesday if needed. He is slated to bat eighth and will catch rookie left-hander Drew Smyly, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to today's game.
Smyly has been on the disabled list June 11, battling an ugly blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. Smyly, who turned 23 earlier this month, is 2-2 with a 3.96 ERA in 12 starts this year.
To clear a spot on the Tigers' roster, the club optioned Jacob Turner back to Triple-A Toledo. Turner made one spot start in Smyly's absence, allowing one run in a five-inning start against St. Louis last Thursday.
