Detroit Tigers prospect Franklin Perez, one of the main trade pieces in the Justin Verlander trade, is once again having surgery. In 3 years, he pitched a total of 42 innings. Hasn't pitched since 2019. Time to stick a fork in this one.
Totally Tigers

The Tigers now have 3 pitchers on their 40-man roster with long-term injuries, which means their 40-man roster is basically a 37-man roster.
This would obviously be a greater source of concern if the Tigers were competing and not 14 games under .500 on May 11.
Franklin Perez is an interesting situation b/c this is his final option year.
It seems unlikely that he will make the Opening Day roster in 2022, at which point he'd have to be DFA'd.
So if the Tigers needed a 40-man spot now or later this summer, they could just release him.

RHP Buck Farmer has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple A Toledo.
Although technically Farmer had the right to reject the assignment to Toledo, that would have been highly unlikely as it would have required him to forfeit the remainder of his 2021 salary. So he remains in the organization and perhaps we'll see him again this year.

Oh and one last bit of news;
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/05/jordan-zimmermann-retires.html
Jordan Zimmermann Retires.
MLBTR

It was a constant struggle to stay healthy in Detroit for Zimmermann, who spent time on the injured list not only due to the previously mentioned neck strain but also with a lat strain, a shoulder impingement, a UCL sprain, cervical spasms in his back, and a forearm strain.
That mountain of injuries clearly took its toll on the former All in all, Zimmermann spent a half decade with the Tigers and mustered just a 5.63 ERA in 514 frames.

Highly unlikely JV would return to the Tigers for 4 major reasons. First, that he'll be 39 years old and will want more than a 1-year contract that would take him into his 40's.

Second, that next year will still be a recovery year for his arm will full efficiency not expected until closer to 2023. (see Fulmer, Michael) Highly unlikely the Tigers will spend that money and not get the desired results until a full year later, at best.

Third, if a team is rebuilding with a roster full of 20-something starting pitchers, does adding a 40-year-old pitcher make sense? And does JV really want to return to a team nowhere near ready to be competitive?

And fourth, the salary dump performed by the Tigers and resulting disastrous trade back in 2017 is something the organization doesn't want to revisit with fans. Mr. I's son doesn't exhibit the same sentimental streak as his dad.

Totally Tigers

Spencer Torkelson is the biggest name on the Whitecaps, and though he showed signs of a breakout on Saturday, overall his first week of pro ball was one to forget. He finished 3-for-19 with a double, three RBIs, and three walks, but he also struck out 11 times.

Coupled w/his forgettable stint in ST I'm not impressed, but not alarmed (yet). BUT a #1 pick who plays @ the IF corners has to be able to hit, and hit w/power.
