Titus Young to be cut by the RAMS today

Finally someone who gets it. Good post. And Avril was very much in the Lions long term plans. It amazes me how poor peoples memories can be sometimes. They offered him a 3 year deal in July. But Avril had outrageous demands.

Mayhew did everything right to try to keep him and offer him a good deal, Avril is the one who messed up with
1) outrageous demands (he was talking this season about getting paid like Mario Williams)
2) unexpected poor play in 2012 after two good seasons in 2010/2011 rushing the passer. 2011 he was a big playmaker and part of the Lions future. It is not Mayhew's fault Avril suddenly started sucking after 2 good seasons.

Now he's probably gone as his demands remain outrageous and his play dropped.

Are you saying during the season or even right after he was franchised you didn't think his demands would be outrageous? And you just said it, he turned down a contract because his demands were high so .. we knew he wouldn't be here for 2013. Thanks for proving my point.

if a avril is in our long term plans its proof mayhew fucking blows at his job. hopefully xanders slaps him and tries to wake him up.

Dude, the guy is asking for a ton. If you thought he'd be back for 2013 - well what can I say - you're an ...

And yeah, though Reiff really didn't get the snaps he should have gotten. That's on Schwartz.

I didn't want Avril here in 2010...2011....2012.....2013....guy is a situational pass rusher in a 4-3 and wants to be paid like Mario Williams. Funny.

That said, even when they franchised him they offered him a 3 year deal.....so don't act like his departure was a given. Before the end of this year, and even now, there are plenty of indications that he might be back (god forbid).

Mayhew offered him 10 million a year. He should have taken it. Mayhew did everything right in this situation. Avril just took it up a notch in July and then sucked in 2012.

Plus Backus is older and needed replaced. Reiff was BPA over Mercilus. Avril should be in their long term plans but now that he won't budge, he'll probably walk. Top 5 DE is better than Mercilus too.

Avril was a better option than freaking Mercilus going into 2012. Mayhew made the right call with Reiff over Mercilus. Mayhew did plan ahead with Reiff and Broyles. He's a good GM.

If they took Mercilus, I know you would be clamoring how Mayhew is an idiot for not taking a tackle given Backus age and Gosders pending free agency.

In the age of the rookie cap, there was zero reason to keep Avril last year. Dump the guys who demand more than they are worth and bring in a rookie to replace them and reallocate that money toward other areas of need in FA.

The fact Mayhew is even considering bringing Avril back for another year is a strong indicator that he does not comprehend how to be a powerful GM in this new era, not to mention is the direct reason the Lions continue to be in Cap Hell and cannot afford better FAs. Should they get the #1 FA guys? NO!!! Obviously he would be simply trading one over-priced player for another. But grab a guy who is at least a quality starter. We don't need All-Pros at every position, we need a quality TEAM!

no....id just take joeckel or fisher at 5. done and done. still have an extra 10.6 million to sign a FA.

That's kind of what I'm hoping for now. Maybe datone jones will be there in the second. If not Sam Montgomery should be. If something like that happens Mayhew would need to trade back into the second for a decent corner... What a mess.

This season we do have that 10.6 million. And we'll just take a top 5 DE who is way better than Mercilus. And Reiff proved he could play LT. Done and done.

It was a given once he turned it down because he wants to get paid..we all saw it. I'm not talking about Mayhew but we as fans knew he'd be gone 2013.

I'm not talking about Mayhew being right or wrong. But as fans we knew which means Mayhew should have known at least a little bit.

You didn't know at the time. Avril was a good player in 2011 and 2010 and should have been retained. He was and they tried long term but Avril overrated himself and then played poorly, which was incredibly unexpected. To say you knew going into 2012 Avril was going to play like shit, well you are full of shit or just a hater.

I knew he was gone, we couldn't afford him long term last year and still can't. Even said DE was a need in the draft. Was hoping by some miracle we could trade him but that was a pipe dream. Now all we can hope for is a comp pick. If Mayahew didn't see this coming he's a fool.

Avril is the fool who didn't take the 3 year deal. The Lions did afford him last year and have room for him this year as well with KVB/Peterman gone, the 2 pay cuts of Raiola and Burleson and a Stafford extension. Plus other moves they could make, Robiskie, Tyrell Johnson, Mike Thomas wasting cap room. Plenty of room to bring back Avril as long as Avril starts to become reasonable. If Avril continues to be unreasonable then he walks and we take a top 5 DE to either replace Avril or pair with Avril.

It was the right move to retain him going into 2012, it's the right move to sign him at a reasonable price but if Avril continues to want to be overpaid, then he'll walk and the Lions have a plan in place with the draft.

Mayhew has done nothing wrong based on the informaiton he had at the time. Avril is the one who messed up with unexpected bad play and delusions of grandeur in his play. He'll come back to the real world once he hits the market. Happened to Tulloch last year.

Well we will see if avril is the fool when he signs a deal. Ya they can afford him if they cut people but that doesn't mean its a good deal. Mayhew did play it right but if he didn't see this as a possible outcome then he is the fool.

They cut KVB and Peterman. They both suck. You cut your bad players and keep your good ones.

Avril 5 year 50 million with a 20 SB
1 base +4 SB allocation=5 million cap hit
4 base +4=8 million cap hit year 2
7 base +4=11 million cap hit year 3
8 base +4=12 cap hit year 4
10 base +4=14 cap hit year 5

We could afford Avril in the first 3 years which is an enternity in football. Year 4 restructure or cut/trade him. It's up to Cliff. That would be a Cliff friendly deal and still doesn't hurt the Lions early.

NO MORE CLIFF AVRIL.....not for ANY price. He can't defend the run and is a slightly above average pass rusher.

Thats it.

Unless it's the vet. minimum.....time to go uncle Cliffy!!!!!

That's why we knew he wouldn't be back. Are you following this? We knew he wanted big bucks, Mayhew should have known much further back than that. He only offered what he could though he had to know that Avril want more.

No way I'd give him 5 years.
