The Lions are trading for San Francisco OLB Eli Harold, per source. Giving up a conditional seventh-round pick in 2020 in return

Good!! Not a superstar by any stretch but at least they're doing something about the passrush. Former 3rd rd pick and he's still young. Maybe a new atmosphere is what he needs.

In all likelihood, the 49ers were going to cut him so they trade him for something vs. getting nothing in return. He may be able to help the Lions. Probably a win-win.

In typical ESPN fashion, this was the headline.

LB Eli Harold, one of first three 49ers to kneel during anthem, traded to Lions

Well to be fair that probably is his most noteworthy "accomplishment" while being in the league.

Harold is in the final year of his contract and his cap hit with the Lions will be around $1.9 million, which is a little less than what they just freed up by releasing Cornelius Washington.

Our LB core must really be in bad shape.

It is. But this is a good trade. Teams PRAY they get guys like this with 7th round picks. Solid depth guys that might excel in one aspect of the game like Harold does. (athletic run defender, some pass rush ability).

I realize the 49ers organization aren't the sharpest in the tool shed but why trade him if he has value?

What value? He failed as a 49er. He's still young so maybe a change of scenery gets those juices flowing. We acquired him for peanuts....hopefully Patricia coaches him up.

Different reasons. Sometimes guys don't fit new schemes. I think that's what Harold's issue is. Doesn't mean he's a budding star, but it doesn't mean he's crap either. They traded him because they were going to cut him anyway. It's a win win. The 9ers get SOMETHING for him, and the Lions get his rights without having to win a free agent battle for him.

And it's a conditional pick. There may not be any compensation if he doesn't make the team out of camp.

I think the 49ers are better now under Lynch. Essentially, they traded a guy they were going to cut anyway, got a 7th round pick and won't take the $1.9M cap hit for cutting him. Now, if the Lions cut him, they take the cap hit since his salary is guaranteed.

The only part of the cap hit the Lions are responsible for is his base salary. The cap hit for his prorated signing bonus still belongs to the 49ers because they paid it to him.

according to this his base salary, this year is $1,892,000

However, it looks like there might still be about $174K of bonus breakdown left to allocate.

So it's either $1.892M or $1.718M
