Trey Flowers, the top FA pass rusher in NFL, signs with Detroit, starts on PUP

There has been plenty of talk about where Da?Shawn Hand (@TheHand54) will line up in 2019, here?s how he did in 2018...
Outside Tackle- 16 snaps (3.5%)
Over Tackle- 71 snaps (15.3%)
Over Guard- 297 snaps (64.1%)
Over Center- 79 snaps (17.1%)

In comparison, Trey Flowers (@III_Flowers) rookie year (2016)...
Outside Tackle- 239 snaps (32.5%)
Over Tackle- 149 snaps (20.3%)
Over Guard- 175 snaps (23.8%)
Over Center- 171 snaps (23.3%)
Box LB- 1 snap (0.1%)

Will be interesting to see how they are used together in 2019.

Lions? Trey Flowers dominating all facets of the game.
Flowers was the only edge in 2018 with an 80.0+ grade in all facets of the game, per PFF.
While the Patriots weren?t ready to spend the dough to keep him around, the Detroit Lions saw something vital in Trey Flowers?and he?s got the grades to back it up.

Per Pro Football Focus, Flowers was the only edge defender last season with a grade of 80.0 higher and above in all four facets of the game, according to their system.

With a grade breakdown of:

90.4 overall
88.5 run defense
80.1 tackling
80.6 pass rush

New #Lions Edge Trey Flowers (@III_Flowers) was the only edge in 2018 with an 80.0+ grade in all four facets of the game. #OnePride

The Lions are hoping Flowers lives up to these grades after signing him to a hefty five-year, $90 million deal. He?s steadily improved throughout his career, finishing last year as one of five edge defenders to pass a 90.0 overall grade.

This morning, Flowers (and Damon Harrison Sr.) also made PFF?s list of top 50 players in the NFL entering the 2019 so far. They?ve announced numbers 50-31, and Nos. 30-21 will be revealed Tuesday, Nos. 20-11 Wednesday and Nos. 10-1 on Thursday.

From PFF?s Austin Gayle:
Flowers eats away at his good-not-great pass-rushing ability with his run defense and versatility, specifically his ability to rush the passer from ranging pre-snap alignments as mentioned above. He?s a movable chess piece with consistent, high-end play in several areas over the years, a piece that teams should and will jump to move into their system if given the opportunity this offseason.

Trey Flowers? contract named Lions riskiest offseason move.
The Lions gave the edge defender a huge deal, will it prove to be worth it?
It is impossible to build a winning football team without taking a few risks. The Philadelphia Eagles maxed out their cap and traded up to draft Carson Wentz second overall in the build up to the 2018 Super Bowl. The New England Patriots are known for trading away players at their prime to replace them with more cap-efficient options, and they have had success for the better part of the past 20 years. The Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints all also made incredibly risky moves in the build up to successful 2018 campaigns.

The Detroit Lions are hoping that a few of the risky moves they made this offseason will lead to similar success.

Bleacher Report?s Kristopher Knox listed what he believes to be the most risky move made by every team this offseason, and for the Detroit he named the mega-deal the gave former Patriots edge defender Trey Flowers.

Knox said:
On one hand, the move appears solid. Flowers was one of the best and most versatile ends in the game last season, and he?ll enter a familiar scheme under Patricia. On the other hand, there?s no guarantee that his success over the last couple of years wasn?t largely a product of the talent around him.

The choice makes sense. While Flowers could prove to be a star, if he does not live up to expectations then his cap number will handicap Bob Quinn and the Lions going forward.
