EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams released defensive end Michael Sam on Saturday, the team announced.

Sam's efforts to become the first openly gay player in NFL history came up just short in a competition against undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks.

Westbrooks is one of nine defensive linemen to land a roster spot.

Sam officially hit waivers Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when all NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to the league-mandated 53 players. From there, the other 31 teams will have 24 hours to put in a claim for Sam.

According to one league source, the Rams would like to bring Sam back to their 10-man practice squad.

The Rams spent a seventh-round draft pick, No. 249 overall, on Sam in May's draft. In arriving in St. Louis, Sam joined a team about two hours from the Missouri campus where he went to school, but also one loaded with defensive line talent. Sam put together a solid preseason performance, coming up with 11 tackles and three sacks. In Thursday night's preseason finale against Miami, Sam finished his preseason work with a team-high six tackles.

After the game, coach Jeff Fisher offered an endorsement of Sam's ability.

"I believe he can play in this league," Fisher said.

Teams can begin signing players waived in the final round of cuts after the waiver period ends Sunday.

good, saw him yapping the other night to the cameras basically suggesting he won't be cut because he's played good enough to make the team and would be surprised if he was cut. I thought to myself he should be cut just for that, making the decision for the coaches himself in public like that. what a douche bag.

All the stuff I heard on the radio during the week suggested he had a great camp... He was really pushing for a spot on the final roster. Doing good work on special teams... Not all that sure I am buying the numbers game coming from the coach....

ive watched a lot of football this preseason. Westbrooks had as good as numbers as him if not better and got the final spot. Sam has absolutely zero ST value from all reports and westbrooks does. Made the decision pretty easy but id have to say by all accounts...fisher gave him every opportunity to succeed.

Well, he had 3 sacks and looked good. IMO, a team with bad DE depth will pick him up soon. He'd need to play ST in stl and that's not happening.

Damn. I was looking forward to the headline: Michael Sam Rams D End

I heard Sams's biggest problem was that he couldn't keep himself from biting on the backdoor play...

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYYY-OOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!!

Was watching wrestling last night and they offered sam to make an appearance on raw next Monday.

Second favorite headline. Michael Sam gets opportunity to play with Boys.
