Valverde is DFA'ed and is now unconditionally released

I think he was referring to not having an every day LF and doing nothing to improve the BP

Well the fact is all signed pointed to nothing needing be done. If Al Al and BV had preformed like they should have, and Dotel not been injured, the BP would not be an issue.

Dirks earned the right to play LF or at least platoon against RH pitchers last year, and even now we are not hurting for OF depth (not counting the guys on the DL).

It's easy to sit back and wait for something to break and say "oh yeah thats DD's fault for not knowing Dirks would regress or Avila would not hit, or Victor"...etc.

I for one never had much faith in Al Al or BV. As far as Dotel....he is 39....that should have been a concern. They needed to add a closer. I think most people knew the bull pen was going to be a concern.

who do you think they should have brought up?
Really don't have a problem with him being up. Just have a problem with Leyland not using him. Hell, at the least he could DH him for VMart once a week and I don't think anyone would complain. Don Kelly should never...ever ever ever....play over him when he's up.

I guess its good but it doesn't give me a warm fuzzy. Still got Coke.

The Tigers have unconditionally released Jose Valverde.

Maybe the indians will sign him up too.

No surprise.

He had a good run for a while, but it was clear even when he was winning this year that 1 pitch was not going to cut it.

I'm curious if the coaches asked him to get back to another pitch and he just couldn't do it or what..Not many pitch good with only one pitch. How Mario does it I have no idea..

Looks like Jose will have to do his pitching in SA or maybe for an independent league ballclub here in the US, b/c he went unsigned last off-season. Doubt that any MLB teamwiould sign him to a minor league contract, but had he been a LOOGY RP, and not a RH CL, then maybe Valverde might have been given another shot. Tigers' scouts were the only ones watching him pitch in Venezuela last spring, IIRC.

If he couldn't throw his splitter in damp/cool/cold weather, then he was useless for the Tigers from the get-go, really. It can get quite chilly if not downright cold @ night in Detroit as soon as late September. In fact, I remember swiping ~an inch of early snowfall off the hoods and roofs of cars one night in mid-September in the early 70s, to join in a snowball fight with my teenage friends.

Thank God we don't even have the option to call him up anymore. Remember in late June Jose was like "Hell no, I'll be back in three weeks!!" LMFAO. I hate you Jose Valverde. Good, sweet riddance to you.
