what type of gun nut are you?

I've noticed that most people fall into the following categories:

The gun lover. Whenever there is a mass shooting, these types retreat to their homes and gently caress their firearms, or as they refer to them, their "precious," kissing them tenderly, and shouting "YOU LEAVE GUNS ALONE! Guns never hurt anyone." at arguing for some restrictions on gun usage/ownership.

The 2nd Amendment Scholar. these law school rejects were overjoyed when a GOP-appointee heavy Supreme Court finally issued a ruling in DC vs. Heller. now they had something to go on... and of course, even though they argue that a Supreme Court ruling here conclusively decides an issue, this reasoning doesn't apply to decisions they didn't like, such as Roe vs. Wade, or Brown vs. Board of Education.

The community college statistician. cites statistics showing declines in violent crime rates, and concludes these could only be attributed to concealed carry, and increased gun ownership. Also fond of comparing the murder rates of sparsely populated rural states with densely populated cities... "there are hardly any murders in Oklahoma because we have concealed carry, but look at Chicago; toughest handgun laws in the country and a high murder rate. ya see?" Dismisses any statistics that do not support his argument out of hand, and will not even consider any alternative explanations, such as improved socio-economic conditions, better police tactics, etc.

the conspiracy theorist. these mass shootings are engineered by the standard all-powerful cabal of left-wing bogeymen: communists-liberal college professors-black panthers-feminists. their goal is to sway public opinion against gun ownership and take our guns! Maybe not this time, or after any of the other dozen or so mass shootings we've had this year, but next time... just you wait: black helicopters, UN troops, and gay pride parades on main street USA.

guy currently shooting lots of people in suicidal shooting spree. appears to be fond of guns, but could not be reached for comment. responds only with hail of bullets.

"I can't hear you. Don't fire the gun while you're talking."

Good idea. These discussions are so much easier after we're sorted into these little boxes. I might be a community college statistician. I'm not sure. Could you draw up some boxes for the other side? I might not be a gun nut.

There is the substantial category of responsible people who just own firearms for hunting and recreational use.

I know. also there are some reasonable gun owners out there, but they typically don't engage in these sort of discussions and (like me) keep their political opinions to themselves while at cabela's or at the range.

then you might be on the other side. there are two sides... gun nuts and reasonable people.

I came to this conclusion over the weekend after seeing the various types of gun nuts ignore any evidence that blew away, or shot down (pun intended) their arguments, and either resorted to another, or simply repeated themselves, a bit angrier each time.

some gun nuts combined the skills of different types of gun nut and became more powerful, like a voltron gun nut.

This sounds awesome. By your powers combined, I am Captain Gun Nut!

Being on the reasonable side is a big disappointment when you have the option to be a part of this.

The gun control conversation is in full swing, so I started a thread on the politics board FYI.

Since I don't own a gun, I guess I fall under the Reasonable Person category then.

Looking forward to MichChamp trying to call me out on this! ;P

And there are people who do not own guns (me) but do not think that those who do should surrender them to law enforcement without cause. We have seen that national governments can be just as irresponsible with firearms and actually kill people on far larger scales than any private citizen will ever be capable of. It can also shoot people by mistake, in cold blood, in mass-effect and even capriciously, and no one is championing the notion of disarming the FBI, DEA, BATF, IRS, USDOA and the remaining 30+ federal agencies who carry firearms on their person.

actually, no. you're a gun lover, but a harmless one. kinda like being a heavy rootbeer drinker, or a guy who likes to smoke candy cigarettes.

Some nights I like to throw a few cold rootbeers back, pop off a few rounds in my nerf gun, then have a relaxing candy cig smoke.

Has there ever been a positive outcome for a citizen who took up armed resistence against any irresponsible use of firearms by any agency of the federal government?

I am baffled how you can think that that is my point.

no. there was an editorial cartoon this weekend, that had a guy marking a chalk-board. it said "2nd Amendment Score Card" at the top

on one side it said "innocent people killed in mass shootings," and there were hundreds of hash marks. the other side said "tyrannical governments stopped" and there were none.

I'm just a guy with 3 legally obtained, registered handguns who, also, has a CCW. Coincidentally, that would be enough to reenact the Newton shooting were I insane enough to do something like that.

2 of my handguns have clips that hold 15 rounds. I have multiple clips for each handgun and can reload in less than 2 seconds. My other handgun is a revolver and it might take me 3 seconds to load with my speedloader if i'm not hurrying. If I were to carry all 3 at once, I could take out 36 people without having to reload at all. I personally would never do that, though. I only shoot my guns at targets. I don't hunt.

Well, unless you actually are championing the notion of disaming federal law enforcement agencies because some law enforcement officers of those agencies have at times used their firearms irresponsibly, then, sorry...I don't understand what your point is.

But - that isn't true - you're not just a guy; you're a trained law enforcement/criminal justice professional, employed by the government to protect citizens against criminals.

Any rationale person who knows that would expect that you've undergone significant weapons use and safety training, and have passed psychological evaluations - I wouldn't be surprised if you are required to pass one perioodically - that demonstrate your emotional stability.

It would be expacted that munitions that might be illegal for regular civilians would not be so for you, and that you would know how to use them responsibly and safely.
