Calvin Has Officially Retired

Teams cut players because they suck and don't live up to performing to their estimated value. The Lions did not suck going into 2015, during 2015 or during 2016. Loaded team with playoff talent. Calvin was overpaid and should be thanking the Lions for the opportunity.

Calvin doesn't need to thank the Lions for the opportunity because every other team in the NFL would have given him the same opportunity.

Calvin is an idiot who couldn't judge the great talent the Lions had going into 2016. But we'll take the cap space and TJ Lang and Rick Wagner. And now the Lions dominate

22 upgrades. Strengths are strongers, weaknesses are gone and team is deep

The Lions got outscored by 42 in 2015 and by 12 in 2016, no playoff wins and an overall .500 record. I think his assessment of the Lions, regarding the chances of going to the SB over the past 2 years, is MUCH better than yours.

Lions got screwed by injuries and refs in both seasons. His assessment, much like yours is terrible.

And any Lions fan who calls the Lions a terrible organization(especially currently) shouldn't be a fan.

you are a broken record....same excuses year after year.

I'm not a Lions fan...I follow them but I'm not a fan. I'm more of an impartial observer. I didn't say that they are currently a terrible organization, I think they are actually improving on that front. I did say that in NFL circles that they are considered a laughing stock, due to their record over the past 6 decades.

You're not a fan of the team? You're an Impartial observer?? What the holy fucking hell?!?! Lmao. Dude, you're a straight up motherfucking clown. Impartial observer?! Jesus Christ...this takes the cake. Wow!

I like Calvin, the only player post Barry that I have a jersey for. But I couldn't care less about why a multi millionaire called it quits early. Dude needs to move on, just like the Lions have.

And as far as the argument I read above that "players ask to be released all the time and teams grant it"...not a player of Calvin's caliber. Not only is he valuable as a player, he's very marketable because he kept his nose clean and stayed out of trouble. You don't just release a player like that.

How do you know anything about NFL circles. You don't. It's your own bias. Impartial LOL

Go observe another team. Your observances are not needed here.

He should have been honest from the start. His reason for retiring..."my body is beat up". Two yrs later? It changes to, "we're not contenders". Oh, "and my body is still beat up though". He's a fucking coward! What's next? Calvin didn't get along with Stafford or Caldwell??? Dude is weak.

He doesn't really owe the fans an explanation. At least not 100% honest one. Fans don't need to know everything that goes on behind closed doors.

Now if he wasn't honest to management about why he was retiring, then that is on him. I agree with that. But we don't know what he told management. Plus ownership seems to be being just as petty as CJ is. But it doesn't matter, he's gone.

But he isn't wrong, we're still not a Superbowl contender. We're sitting in the middle of the pack. A fringe playoff team if lucky. Betting odds has more likely to finish with a losing record than a winning record. Only 10 teams have worse odds than us to win the superbowl.

Nothing he said is untrue.

You could tell he was done midway through the 2015 season. Probably after the summer and starting to feel better he wanted to come back and play, but with a different team. Didn't want to go through the transition of new GM/rebuilding again. Team said no.

Can't really blame the guy for asking. Teams cut players all the time when they no longer fit what they want. This is a player asking to be released because the team no longer fits what he wants.

Funny how fans bitch and moan about a player needing to live up to the contract they sign, but have no issue of a team cutting a player and the team choosing not to honor the contract.

But you're not going just release a player of his caliber. It's not like cutting a 3rd sting QB. Anyway, that's between him and management. As far as me, a fan .. don't sign the contract if you feel this way. Maybe he didn't feel this way until after but their are other ways to go about it. I'm curious if he asked to be traded or just released? Because no team will just release a Calvin Johnson.

He's a coward. Plain and simple. Be truthful. Don't wait until 2 yrs later to run your mouth about how the Lions aren't ready. Just say it at the time!!! It's real simple actually. He looks like a bitch in my eyes. We don't need to know every gruesome detail on why he's retiring. I'm not askkng that but be somewhat truthful lol.

Are you okay with Calvin Johnson speaking out against Lions?
Should Calvin be free to say what he wants or should he just shut the fuck up?
PrideOfDetroit

I am perfectly ok with Calvin saying whatever the heck he wants to about the Lions, the Lions deserve every bit of criticism they get just for being the inept Lions. One comment I saw elsewhere about the whole not being able to get of his contract someone asked why did he sign it then in the first place, someone replies he thought they had a chance to win at the time. Then someone says that doesn't make any sense nobody that signs a contract with the Lions expects to win.

exactly...I follow the Lions because they are the NFL team of the area but I really don't give a shit if they win or lose. I certainly don't waste my money on them. I find it entertaining to follow what they do and talk about them on this board.

So in your eyes that makes me a "motherfucking clown"? I think anybody goes to games and buys Jerseys are just wasting their money, but to each their own.

You just love to bash them. LOL don't care if they win or lose. Why even bother. You are wasting your time.

I know you fucking want them to lose just so you can bash them

I enjoy following what they are doing with the team, but weather they win or lose on a Sunday...I really don't care. Sometimes I do find it funny when they lose in typical Lion fashion just so I can see some of the more pathetic losers here make their normal excuses (LKP). If you really think about it...anybody that has a rooting interest in any team is wasting their time.

I don't always bash them...only when they deserve it. I actually think Quinn is doing a pretty good job since he took over.

So let me get this straight......you spend 3-4 hours of your Sunday watching a team you "don't care" about so you can go on a message board with people you don't know to see the excuses their making for a loss of a team that, again, you don't care about?

Hmmmmmm......whose the pathetic loser?

who's ;)

I don't sit and watch the Lions for 3-4 hours a weekend. If I watch football, I flip between games. Unfortunately, where I live, I am usually forced to watch the Lions since they are on almost every weekend, which is the main reason I have followed them over the years. I actually enjoy the NFL more for gambling and fantasy football.

I don't expect people to understand. Most of you are diehard Lions fans, which is fine.
