Verlander traded to Houston, TJ Surgery, Wins 2 WS, Wins 3rd Cy Young Now a Met

JV says he wants to pitch until he is 45.
Now a lot can happen in the next 9 years.
This sounds like he wants the best opportunity
to win 300 games. It?s possible but again anything can happen
that derails that. Still a great chance for 250 to 275 plus wins.
As for going in with an astros cap, it is possible, or no
team logo. It did happen with are own Tigers great pitcher
Jim Bunning. Bunning pitched for the Tigers a few more years
than the phillies but went into Cooperstown with the phillies logo.
He pitched a perfect game vs. the mets.
Time will tell.

Justin Verlander is approaching some important personal milestones.

The Houston Astros' ace is far more concerned with the goals his team is on the cusp of achieving.

Verlander picked up his major league-leading 19th win, and Yuli Gurriel, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez all homered to help the Astros to a 4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.

The Astros are a win away from their third straight 100-win season and have a magic number of one to clinch a playoff berth and three to capture their third straight American League West title.

"I think there's two ways to think about it: Either we came in and expected to win it or you appreciate the moment," Verlander said. "I think this team, I think we appreciate the moment.

"Obviously, nothing is done yet, but I think we've done an incredible job of just going out and continuing to play Astros baseball and win and not look in the rearview mirror, stay on the gas."

Verlander (19-6) added to his case for the AL Cy Young Award by striking out eight and scattering four singles over six scoreless innings. He lowered his AL-leading ERA to 2.50, and his 283 strikeouts this season leave him 11 shy of becoming the 18th player in MLB history to reach 3,000.

He is one win away from reaching 20 for the second time in his career and the first time since winning a career-high 24 games in 2011, when he was voted AL MVP and Cy Young winner.

Houston manager AJ Hinch was asked to describe Verlander's season.

"We need an hour of conversation to talk about his season," Hinch said. "He's so super focused on the days that he pitches. He executes his game plan, and it's a sight to see."

Verlander (20-6) yielded six hits and two runs in five innings to reach 20 wins for the second time in his career and the first since winning the AL MVP and Cy Young Award in 2011 when he went 24-5 for Detroit.
This year's AL Cy Young front-runner struck out five to leave him six strikeouts shy of becoming the 18th pitcher in MLB history to reach 3,000.

The 36-year-old righty has fanned 288 this season, second most in his career and second in the majors behind teammate Gerrit Cole.

Verlander, who leads the AL with a 2.53 ERA, is the first Astros pitcher to win 20 games since Dallas Keuchel went 20-8 in 2015 when he won the Cy Young.

Congratulations to Verlander getting 3,000 career strikeouts and 300 strikeouts on what should be his second Cy Young Award. He has finished second three times and should have won at least twice in those years voting.

Should have been more clear, exclusion was his first 2 post season years where yes, he was not good. Career is career, everything included.
 
A lot can happen in small sample sizes. Post Season and World Series generally normalizes over more sample size. The fact he "sucks" in World Series and is 0-4 has to be taken for what happened.


1. Out of 5 WS Starts, 3 have been Quality Starts, which is within a margin of error.

2. He started Game 1 in 2006 as a rookie and got slammed! His other bad start game in 2013.

3. 4 of his 5 WS Starts have come on the road.

4. He has received terrible Run Support in these starts

Justin Verlander was brilliant in holding the Rays to 1 hit in 7 scoreless innings as the Astros roared to a 6-2 win on Friday afternoon at Minute Maid Park in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

In the process, Verlander notched his 14th career postseason win to tie Hall of Famer Tom Glavine for third-most all-time.
