1972 ALCS

Yeah no kidding.... Man That one hurt... Not sure we would have beaten the Reds with our aging team but it would have been fun... I was 11 in 1972 and losing to A's really hurt...

Funny how we won the East with a 86-70 record and Boston had a 85-70 record but did they not make up that game....LOL

Big MLB blunder, that certainly helped the Tigers, was when the games resumed after the strike, then commssioner Bowie Kuhn, aka bowie the buffoon, would not makeup the games or make for a balanced schedule so all teams played the same amount of games the rest of the season. One thing I remember for the Tigers drive to the pennant that September was Kaline batting .500 for 2 to 3 weeks. He carried them with hit after hit.
Martin had alot of clashes with some of the Tigers veterans, most notable were Horton and Northrup, and neither of them took any shit from billy. The benching of them hurt in that series.
The two things I remember most from that series was that hbp of campaneris by Lagrow. Billy came out of the Tigers dugout and was going after campy. Several Tigers players circled around Billy to make sure he didn't get to him, all the while campy mouthing off while taking steps back.
and when that marquez got the hit all I could say at the time was who the fuck is this guy??
I don't think they would have had success against the reds, but that's why they play the games.
Lastly, and really first, when the Tigers won that game to clinch it by the 1/2 game being 1 1/2 up with just one game left, naturally I was watching the feed here in beantown. Johnny Pesky the old redsox player, coach, manager, and also a player for the Tigers in a big 10 or 12 player trade back in the early 50's, was the color commentator. I swear to this day, I can still see "the steam" coming out of his ears he was so bullshit the rsox lost. lol

RE: Marquez...when I read this, I thought the same thing. I have never heard of this guy. In high school, one of my teachers did photos for TOPPS and he'd quiz me on obscure players and I shocked him b/c I could remember some oscure lefty with 2 games experience, but could not keep the Greek gods straight...but that is another story.

It always seemed that Martin could wring out whatever talent was left out of a team but when he moved on, the old team was left in shambles.
