Bill Parcels once said that a bad draft can destroy a team for 6 -7 years. Not a bad pick, but just a bad overall draft.

I was thinking abou that, mostly because of all the risky picks the Lions have been associated with this year, and decided to look up the 2005 draft.

1. Mike Williams, WR, USC. (rd. 1)
2. Shaun Cody, DT. USC (rd. 2)
3. Stanley Wilson, CB, Stanford (rd. 3)
4. Dan Orlovsky, QB, Connecticut (rd. 5)
5. Bill Swancutt, DE, Oregon State (rd. 6)
6. Johnathon Goddard, LB, Marshall (rd. 6)

If the Tuna was right, how in the hell did we even survive the next 7 years, because that has to be the worst draft ever put together.

Sheesh Millen, thanks for nothing, and may you smoke a turd in hell.

Stanley Wilson's nickname in college was toast. No lie. That doesn't set off any red flags?

It almost makes we want to cry to look at a draft that devoid of talent. There's not one guy there worthy of being better than a 3rd stringer on any team in the NFL.

Now just think of the guys picked directly after those guys:

Rd 1 - Demarcus Ware
Rd 2 - Stanford Routt
Rd 3 - Vernand Morency (one pick later was Justin Tuck)
Rd 5 - Trent Cole (not amazing, but did go to the Pro Bowl)
Rd 6 - Chad Owens (in retrospect better than Mike Williams slightly) and Joe Berger (still in the league as a backup OL)

If we had selected Demarcus Ware, we'd have been better off with just him than the entire crew of misfits we drafted.

And for more tissue material... other guys taken after Mike Williams in round one include:

Shawne Merriman, Jammal Brown, Derrick Johnson, Roddy White, Heath Miller, Logan Mankins, and of course.... Aaron Rodgers.

Dallas was probably laughing their asses off when Detroit went Mike Williams..

If they weren't pissing themselves laughing on draft day, they were at the end of the season.

That's probably why they gave us picks for Roy Williams, they felt bad for us. Felt they owed us one.

I'd have been happier if they had traded us Ware for Williams... just to make things right.

The 2nd Round is where Millen's brilliance really shined:

2001

Dominic Raiola
Shaun Rogers

2002

Kalimba Edwards

2003

Boss Bailey

2004

Teddy Lehman

2005

Shaun Cody

2006

Daniel Bullocks

2007

Drew Stanton
Ikaika Alama Francis
Gerald Alexander

2008

Jordon Dizon

2007 has to be the all time worst trio of players ever drafted in the second round.

In total 6 out of 10 Millen second rounders are no longer in the league.

3 picks in the second round of 2007 and they're the 3 worse picks ever. Nice. I'm glad that fat piece of shit is gone.

Every so often one hears talk about how terrible Millen was at drafts. Not until the details are brought forward for evidence does it sink in that no one has ever been so inept. To me that brings to question why he had his job for so long, so the owners deserve a good measure of blame for the Millen era as well. It should never have required the team being so decimated that it took until part way through the 0-16 season for the owners to finally wake up from the smell. Like passengers on the Titanic, how many times can you hear the words "unsinkable" before you get slapped by reality. With the picks Millen made, going 0-16 was inevitable despite words and hopes to the contrary.

I had high hopes for Lehman when he became a Lion and he was very good his rookie year. Injuries killed that kid. And we all had a love/hate thing for S. Rogers at one point.

The rest though...pure fn garbage. Looking at that 2007 list makes me vomit all over my keyboard actually. Wow!!!

I had high hopes for most of them at one point. Hawaii 5-0 was a major WTF moment for me though and I think a low point in my Lions fandom where I just knew we f'n sucked.

I wonder how many scouts/ GM's used to fuck with him. Telling him BS crap like "that stanton he's gonna be the best ever in fact were gonna take him in the 2nd, you know if hes still there and all". Then draft day comes and bam the jokes on us.
