Well they tried to sign Max to an extension. He just got a huge offer from the Nats. He wasn't a super stud when Detroit got him so 2 good seasons it was probably a fair offer from MR. I.

DET offered 6 years at $144 Mil ($24 Mil per year) prior to the start of the 2014 season. DET never made him another offer after that, except a $14.3 Mil qualifying offer at the end of 2014.

Scherzer (Boras) got 7 years at $210 ($30 Mil per year) from the Nats, but included a $50 signing bonus. So really, it was 7 years at $160 Mil. Scherzer is a FA after 2021, but will be paid $15 Mil a year from 2022-2028 ($105 Mil total). His deferred salary will be more than what Bobby Bonilla got, but will it be worth it to the Nats?

5 Years with DET = 82-35 .701 WPCT 161 Starts

5 years with WSN = 79-39 .669 WPCT 158 Starts

Also, in December of 2014, DET traded for Alfredo Simon and Shane Greene and traded away Rick Porcello and Robbie Ray. They went into 2015 (74-87) with Verlander, Sanchez, Price, Greene and Simon as their starters. They traded away Price in July of 2015.

From around July of 2014, to July of 2015, DET made one decision after another that were probably devastating to this organization long term. Eugenio Suarez for Alfredo Simon is just an example. Players like Willy Adames and Domingo Leyba will haunt Tiger fans.

I'm not sure I understand the argument that "Max got a fair offer" and turned it down. He only had 2 really good years to that point (1 actually before the deal was offered). He wasn't Roger Clemens who was a stud from the start.

And what does RP and Ray have to do with Scherzer?

The thing about the initial offer to Scherzer I remember is that the Tigers wrote that letter "washing" their hands of losing Scherzer in a manner that would make Pilate shiver, when all Scherzer wanted was to risk-reward 2014 and see what the offers would be in the off-season.

2010 = 12-11 31 GS 18 QS 58.1%

2011 = 15-9 33 GS 16 QS 48.5%

2012 = 16-7 32 GS 20 QS 62.5%

2013 = 21-3 32 GS 25 QS 78.1%

2014 = 18-5 33 GS 22 QS 66.7%

If you actually believe he only had one good year, then your an imbecile. To date, arguably he has had the same record with WSN than he had with DET. He wasn't given a "fair" offer. Period.

Wins don't matter and you know that. QS, 6-3, yeah 4.5 doesn't mean much more. And yes before 2014 he had one really good year. It was a good offer. Btw, if someone called you an imbecile you'd contact a mod and have a hissy fit.

That's fine, can't blame him for getting the best he could.

I would like you to cite for the record what you consider a "good" year for a starter.

And for the record, roughly 5% of Quality Starts are the 6-3 variety. So that is a weak argument against the stat.

I said really good year, 2013. The previously years don't warrant 144m. IMO. Not back then. So yeah I thought it certainly was fair. Max decided to go find out what other offers were offering. Also fair.

Once that happened Mr. I panicked maybe and went out and overpaid for Zimmerman. Its hard to evaluate an AL SP compared to an NL SP but Zimmerman had a better career at the point. Just didn't work out.

You didn't answer the question. Hmmm.

I think you must bypass my posts. 2013 was when he went to a new stratosphere.

If his contract was up after the 2012 season no one would offer him 24m a year. Hence why 2013 was his first REALLY good year, star level.

Jon Lester got 150 million the same season that Scherzer was offered 144 million and got 210 from the Nationals.
