Fair enough but I still go back to my initial thought that 144m was a fair offer.

It was an initial and final offer. A preemptive offer; with no intention to negotiate. That would force me, were I in Scherzer's shoes, to turn it down.

I don't know for sure but I think Max was set on testing the market. I dunno.

And again, you have yet to provide your criteria of what constitutes a good season for a starting pitcher.

Stating DET should have asked top return for Matthew Boyd, who in no way has demonstrated to be a top pitcher, versus being Okay in low-balling Scherzer, who had, is amazing.

SO = 5th

QS% = 6th

GS = 8th

WAR = 9th

xFIP = 17th


FIP = 19th

Verlander, Hernandez, Kershaw, Wainwirght, C. Lee, Hamels Bumgarner, Strasburg, Greinke, D. Price, C. Sale, Sabathia, Lester, Shields all were his peers during that timeframe and all got better deals than the $144 Mil DET offered.


How about the last 5 with DET (2010-2014):

Wins = 3rd

SO = 4th

GS = 6th

WAR = 7th

WPA = 9th

IP = 14th


xFIP = 18th

FIP = 22nd

You keep isolating on 2013, but 2012 was a solid year. 2014 was a really good year.

When Sherzer started:

2010 = 13-18 .419 WPCT (Team .500)

2011 = 21-12 .636 WPCT (Team .586)

2012 = 21-11 .656 WPCT (Team .543)

2013 = 25-7 .781 WPCT (Team .574)

2014 = 24-9 .727 WPCT (Team .556)


The whole goal of a starting pitcher is to give his team a chance to win. Scherzer does that over and over again, both with DET and now with WSN.

But...but...but....the eye test means more than actual stats
 
And again when you see the word great you think it says good. There is a difference from Max 2013 to Max before 2013. This isn't about stats or eye test but the understanding of the English language.

And you still haven't provided your definition of either. Good seasons still = #1-2 caliber. Great = CYA candidate

He more than justified getting paid more. He was a number 1-2 starter before the 2013-2014 season and nothing has changed that fact. Certainly, 2013 was stellar. But 2012 wasn't bad and still in the top 15 for starters in baseball. 2014 just made it even worse. 3 solid years in a row and the Tigers insulted him by not offering him more.

I showed names that were his peers during that timeframe. Each got as much, if not more than Scherzer in contracts. And by your statements on Scherzer, I bet most of them would not qualify as well.

Tigers made an offer to Scherzer that he could refuse and then vilified him for refusing it.

Tigers posing as the good guys:

"The Detroit Tigers have made a substantial, long-term contract extension offer to Max Scherzer that would have placed him among the highest paid pitchers in baseball..."​

Tigers positioning Scherzer as the heartless, greedy athlete:

"And the offer was rejected."​

Tigers washing their hands of the problem:

"Moving forward there will be no further in-season negotiation and the organization will refrain from commenting on this matter."​

Whoops...JV gets pummeled for 2 homers 4 hits and 4 runs in the bottom first of Game 5.

The 4-1 score @ the end of the first wound up being the final score.

Yanks live on to narrow the Astros' ALCS lead to 3 games to 2.

Stros' closer Osuna BlSv w/one out and one on to LeMahieu who battled to a 3-2 count and homered to tie the elimination game 4-4 in top 9th. Stros now batting bottom 9th.

Springer walks w/two out, Altuve follows w/a 2 run walkoff homer to win Game 6, the ALCS, and the AL Pennant...Congrats Astros who will face the upstart WC Nationals team in the '19 World Series next week.

Man Altuve crushed that . Wish I was a Houston fan. Sure do like them over the Yankees lol.
 
Cole on full rest now verses Washington. Should be a pitchers dual as Washington studs have a lot of rest.
