2025 Tigers Spring Training

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

First it was pitchers and catchers but now the entire spring training roster has reported to Lakeland. May the battles begin!
The Tigers have turned the corner. From 2017 through 2023, spring training hadn’t been much of an exercise in competition. The roster was being torn down followed by a purge of old regime players that left a very lean, maybe even skeletal resource of players.
For all those years, we knew who was going to be on the rosters for the most part. There wasn’t much depth at all and as a result, very little competition.
But that all changed last year, Scott Harris’ first year in actually building a roster.
This year, the level of competition will be even higher. There are going to be battles for every single pitching and positional opening – except for 2B. The team has invited 52 players, including 17 non-roster invites, to compete for the 26 roster spots.
Those members will include the regular roster, advanced prospects, free agent invitees and new minor league signings who have invites to ST.
So which competitions are going to be the most interesting to watch? I’ve got my top 5 because, as you know, it is Friday…..

There should be open competition for 1B. Why would she assume that the job is Keith's?

no, they are the two most established hitters on the team. Keith hasn't done shit in his career and has never played 1B on defense.
He was a rookie last season. And after a slow start had a nice season. If he struggles on defense then maybe a change needs to be made. But at this time I don't see a better option. And 20-25 ST at bats shouldn't change that.

I think Tork still deserves a chance to keep his job. I'm not saying it's his to lose, just that they should compete for it.

sure, why not?
Because then you're just ignoring last season. An extra 2-3 hits, or 1 more HR in ST shouldn't get Tork a thing. Also people say Tork improved on defense maybe Keith can as well. He was only a rook and some players do improve.

I'm not discounting last season. You stated that Keith was better during the second half than he was in the first half. Post all star stats. Tork had an OBP of .338 and OPS of .781 post all star. Keith, 0.310 / .665

I'm not saying that I think Tork is the answer. But he still deserves to be in the mix. It's better for the Tigers if he wins the job in ST

Les games. Had a very nice 2-3 week stretch. My problem isn't OPS really, easier for HR hitters to be high in that category. I don't want a .219-.230 hitter unless he hits many home runs. Doesn't really matter what either of us think, the manager GM has already made that decision by signing Torres.

If Tork makes wins the job where does Keith go?

IMO, signing torres was a mistake. He is terrible defensively and is just a band aid. A band aid because they needed a 2B to replace the one they signed to a long contract before even playing a single game at the big league level.

I don't know why you are so adamant to have Keith at 1B even if Tork is even slightly better.

Keith was never my option at 1B. My option would be to go get a 1B but once we signed Torres - it was made for us. Tork didn't hit, obviously has a problem with the fastball and apparently not wanting to change anything with his swing (rumor only). So once Torres sign it was either Keith or Tork. I rather have Keith.
