24 year wait is the fourth longest

I like the quote that early in the season
"The rotation was Justin Verlander and four days of praying for rain, fog or midges"..

I didn't start following baseball until 1993. I was only 9 for the '87 title and had zero interest in baseball. So for me, this is my first division championship. After suffering through the last games of '06 and '09...this feels AWESOME.

Does it really matter to anyone that they got in via the wild card in 2006? They did win the AL pennant that year.

I know the truth is they haven't won the division, but playoffs is the playoffs, and in the end wild card verses division win is pretty meaningless to me.

2006 was a crazy good year. But you still see the reminders from 2006 and 2009 about not winning a division. Now no one can talk about game 163 or choking against the Royals. And no Twins comeback this season.

With the playoff run in 2006, this stat is meaningless. If it was 24 years in between postseason appearances, then it would mean more. Who cares if they did not win the division in 2006? They won 95 games. IMO, the wild card is for teams like Detroit in 2006, who win a ton, but just miss first place. I would rather not have a wild card, but it is there.

Sorry but it means a lot to many of us. So the stat isn't meaningless. The Tigers have AL Pennant banner from 2006. Now they get a 2011 ALC Division title banner. Part of history now.

Winning a division means you have a shot at a home field series.... So it is a big deal...

What I meant was that it makes it sound like the Tigers have not been in the postseason since 1987. They've made the postseason in 2006 and went to the WS, where they literally threw the ball away.

That was my point, but I did a poor job of explaining it.

I'm excited, I just think there's been some poor reporting. It was framed like a playoff drought when I saw the story.

Everyone knows we got to the WS in 2006 but a division title is still hell a nice.

wow 1987 does not seem like 24 years ago. i must be getting old.

Make the playoffs and I'm beyond happy...don't care if we made it as a wildcard or by winning the division. It's nice but I don't use it as bragging material. What would you rather have?

5 wildcard playoff appearances with 1 world series title

or

5 division titles with no world series title

All I know is...there's a reason teams don't put a "wild card winner" banner in their rafters. It just doesn't sound as good...regardless what said team does in the playoffs...
