5 things that must happen for the Tigers to go far

1. Boesch, Young, Raburn must each post an ops of 800 or more.
2. 2 of Fister, Porcello, Scherzer must keep their era's below 4
3. Avila MUST stay healthy.
4. The bullpen has to stay rested on a consistent basis (every starter must eat innings)
5. Verlander should not regress to an above 3.00 pitcher.

What do you think?

Oh ya, scratch the Verlander one and put
Austin Jackson must have an OBP greater than .350.

Bascially you are expecting a perfect season from everyone.

Its 1 thing for me.

-Show up.

This has got to be the most sure fire play off team in Detroit in a while.

I don't think number 1 is realistic or necessary. Boesch has never had an OPS over .8, Young has only done it once and Raburn is about 50/50. You're basically saying that those three need to have career years.

2 - This would be nice. However, all three have been under 4 once out of 3 years. Pretty much saying they need to have career years.

3. Probably true.

4. Agree in theory

5. Jackson has never had an OBP over .350. So, another career year.

Essentially, you are saying that Boesch, Young, Raburn, Fister, Max, Porcello and Jackson need to have career years for the Tigers to go far. Pretty bleak outlook, I think. If that happens, the Tigers may win 110.

I think career norms would mean a division title and a realistic shot to win a title. But even that is asking a lot.

I'm not sure we need those things to make the playoffs, and if we catch heat in the playoffs, then we could easily contend for a WS.

And obviously I would love to see all 5 of those happen

I think that you set yourself up perfectly for being flamed, to be totally honest. Not saying that its all that hard to do on this board though, obviously, as we have plenty of members who are more than willing to oblige.

For me

1. Big bats are great should have a few blowouts but that Station to station RISP from time to time is still a concern IMO. (Lack of overall speed)

2. Jackson must not k so much and need to get on base for those bats behind him. I'm assuming they still plan to lead him off?

3. Both JV's probably can't possibly top last years all world season so would like to see Max not have those off and on again arm slot problems this year and get some quality starts from the #5 whomever that ends up being (probably a revolving door). Hey it won't be Penny!, can't be much worse right? right.

Anyone else notice that Berry is very quietly building his case for perhaps making the team, so far during ST?

:)

*ducks*

Pitching wise I think its the same as last year, Porcello and Scherzer. After that, AJ - he needs to improve on some things. Those work it self out you can get by with a less than stellar 2B/LF/RF.

1 make playoff/win enough games to avoid wild card game!
2 win Division, preferred way to make playoffs
3 win first round of playoffs
4 win second round of playoffs
5 win World Series
Real simple here not who. With the money on the table it better get done. Everyone needs to step it up. It's put up time!

If the OP's wish comes true, the Tigers will go 154-8 and blow through the playoffs in 11 games and give up one unearned run.

Who we going to lose those 8 games to?

Or will those be the games where Leyland actually decides Avila needs a rest before his legs fall off.

Obviously the games with the #5 starter and with Laird back of the dish. They will also all be one-run losses where an ump like C.B. Bucknor, Joe West or Porn 'Stache Bill Hohn hosed numerous critical calls.

After that October run, most pitching staffs overall regress the following season. So don't expect your #4 and #5 to happen.

The Tigers could survive Avila going on the 60 day DL. But what may not survive is the current Tigers farm system rating, when Dombrowski is forced to pay an arm & leg for a noticeable major league replacement catcher to fill the void, over that of Laird and/or Santos.

Hate that mlb keeps recycling some of these bad/incompetent umps.

The only thing that the Tigers need to go far is for 2 pitchers and 2 hitters to get hot in the playoffs and World Series. We are in a weak division and the Tigers should run away with it by August. You don't need greatness across the board to win it all. St. Louis had one role player carry their team last year. Raburn could get hot for the WS and win it all for the Tigers, you never know what might happen. None of the things that you listed need to happen for the Tigers to make the playoffs. A solid number two pitcher would be nice though.
