Analyzing Avril's Sacks

I like SLH so I don't think he's underrated to Lions fans. Good vs the run. As far as protection, Suh or SLH were double teamed 9 of those 11 sacks. That means he benefitted.

Basically says that Avril didn't really benefit from Suh, but some of his sacks were strip sacks that are not necessarily consistent. So his numbers will probably go down a little next year.

Also says that SLH is underrated. Wonder if they'll be able to afford to keep him after this year if Cliff gets his big $$$.

SLH is a RFA...I'm not sure where they tendered him but he might get a raise to around $2Mill this year

Sure. Thats why i said AFTER this year. Hes gonna command a nice deal

Defensive end Cliff Avril was so good last year -- he had 11 sacks and forced six fumbles -- that the Detroit Lions slapped him with the franchise tag. When people debate whether that was a good idea by the club, it typically revolves around whether he really "earned" those numbers or whether he just rode the proverbial coattails of Ndamukong Suh to pile up those stats.

Mark Tanier of Football Outsiders broke down Avril's 2011 sacks and came away with some interesting numbers:

All but one of Avril's sacks came on a four-man rush. He was double-teamed on one of the 11 sacks. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was double-teamed on five of the 11 sacks. Defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill was double-teamed on four of the sacks. Six of the 11 sacks were of the "strip" variety, plays where Avril didn't bring down the quarterback but instead knocked the ball out of his hands, a play that is no less valuable in the grand scheme of things.

ESPN NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert agrees with Tanier that even though Avril may not be an elite defensive lineman, he is worthy of being tagged:

"Did he register any clean-up sacks as quarterbacks ran away from Ndamukong Suh, who was carrying a board with a rusty nail sticking out of it?"

I laughed pretty hard.
