Lions to work out ex-Saints WR Robert Meachem
The Detroit Lions continue to look for potential wide receivers anywhere they might be able to find them.
Colleague Mike Triplett is reporting the Lions will work out former New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meachem on Tuesday -- the second former Saints receiver the team has brought in this offseason. The Lions signed Lance Moore last month.
Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi has familiarity with Moore and Meachem, having worked with both when he was the quarterbacks coach for the Saints and Drew Brees. A lot of what the Lions do offensively has similarities to what New Orleans ran when Lombardi was on staff.
As for Meachem, he'll work out with at least one other receiver. The Detroit Free Press is reporting receiver/kick returner Brad Smith will also work out Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Meachem had seven catches for 114 yards last season. He hasn't had a season of more than 20 catches since his 40-catch, 620-yard year in 2011. At 6-foot-2, Meachem would likely fit as a potential outside receiver.
The 31-year-old Smith has primarily been a returner and special teams player his whole career. A quarterback at Missouri, he converted to receiver once he made the pros and has 104 catches for 987 yards and five touchdowns in a career that started in 2006.
Smith has been mostly used as a kick returner in his career. He has 112 returns and four touchdowns, although none over the past two seasons. In 2013 and 2014, he had five total returns for 127 yards playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. He graded out tied for the No. 117 special teams player according to Pro Football Focus last season.
The Lions have been open about their search for competition at returner for Jeremy Ross.
Meanwhile, colleague Josina Anderson is reporting the Lions are also bringing in running back Ben Tate for a workout Tuesday.
After spending three seasons with the Houston Texans, Tate spent 2014 with Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh -- playing for the Browns and Vikings in the regular season and one playoff game with the Steelers. Tate has 540 carries for 2,363 yards in his career with 14 touchdowns.
