Appalachian State Rematch

I just hate how my friends that are Sparty fans and Ohio fans will never let me forget that damn game. Some of them still wear App St T-shirts they bought after the game.

Funny how some seem to attribute the loss to Rich Rod, forgetting Carr was still coach. That said, App State loss was the catalyst for change and though horribly painful for three years, probably needed. And for those OhioSpartans, enjoy it all you want - its the worst game in 132 teams playing Michigan footbal ...Sparty has decades of that and had Ohio* played App State and won, the game would likely have been vacated anyways.

actually lloyd had wanted to retire before that season and apparently bill Martin scheduled app st without fully consulting LC..

but by then our defense was already suspect those last couple of years

Yeah and having heard from some App State players after the game, our team was FAT AND SLOW and horribly out of shape. Worst than App State barely beating M was the ass-whipping by UO the next week, IMO.

Oregon could have scored 60 if they wanted to. It was just awful to watch.

That Oregon game was lost in the trenches where their linemen were faster, quicker and better condition than Michigan's.

okay lets get back to better memories

Remember when we ripped Noter Dame (sucks) heart out AGAIN last year in the first ever night game in MICHIGAN STADIUM history?!?!?! :)

First things first, priority this year should be whipping sparty's ass and then ohio* in Columbus.

Part of the reason I don't buy into the "root for the B1G in bowl games" argument. I wanted Georgia to destroy MSU. I wanted Oregon to beat up on OSU in the Rose Bowl a couple years back. I don't always root against the B1G teams (was really hoping Wisconsin would beat Oregon last year) but I will never, EVER root for OSU or MSU in a bowl simply because they're in the Big Ten.

And the loss to App State was WAY worse than the loss to Oregon.

I agree bamf I will never root for Sparty or Ohio in anything ever. I want them beat to a pulp every game no matter what sport and if they play each other I wish the entire stadium was vaporized or swallowed by a giant damn sink hole.

I think maybe people are talking about how poorly the team played when they say that was a worse loss? Has to be something like that, because it's a pretty crazy notion without the clarification.

Beginning the season as a legit national title contender, ranked top 5, playing a I-AA team (the best one, but still) at home, with the school's eventual all-time leading rusher and passer, and a future #1 overall pick all returning for their senior year, only to get shredded all day long, but battle back for a chance to win it until a 5th year senior captain forgets that you're supposed to block the inside man on a fg and the potential game winner is blocked and returned for an iconic touchdown. It does not get any worse than that.

No TD on the return, knocked out of bounds by the kicker at what, the 20 or so?

I guess we need to define our terms, huh? After the App State game, Oregon meant nothing. The National championship hopes that were there all summer and that Saturday morning were shot. All that was really left to play for was the Big Ten season, and that Oregon game meant nothing. The only thing I did like was seeing Mallet get in the game. He let a ball fly from about UM's own 5 yard line from the left hash and overthrew the wideout on the right hash past midfield, basically flatfooted. That was an incredible show of arm strength.

Ha, you're right, and I called it iconic. My eyes were probably full of tears by then.

And a telling preview of what was to come (for UM fans at least). Man, did I fall hook line and sinker for that arm.

I guess the nature of the loss is in the eye of the beholder.

If you really believed our 2007 team was a legit national title contender, then yes, the Appalachian State loss was terrible. But if afterward, you dialed down your expectations, and realized that team was not as good as advertised, I think the oregon game was worse. Much worse.

Appalachian State was an example of an overconfident team not taking a minor (but still talented) opponent as seriously as they should have.

but Oregon was a brutal loss. we didn't even belong on the same field as them. that feeling of hopelessness was pretty shocking to me.

I don't think I'd felt that hopeless while watching a Michigan game since that Rose Bowl loss to Washington in the early 90's where napoleon kaufman ran wild.

I remember after the Oregon game they pointed out Michigan was then 0-4 since Bo died. everything was wrong in the world at that point.

I read some comments from those guys who go to practices and write on scout. The narrative that made the most sense to me was that Carr & the team really went through the summer on auto-pilot, and the assumption was that he expected a successor to emerge from either DeBord or English & didn't manage them as much as he should've. For the more experienced DeBord, this wasn't a big deal; but for the defense it was a huge mistake.

after the 0-2 start, Carr had to re-engage with the team, and pull together a team that was not only injured and beaten up, but completely demoralized.
