Marty say's he'll be a Lion in 2012..either tagged or long term deal.

Cliff Avril - DL - Lions

Lions GM Martin Mayhew all but confirmed that the team will franchise tag free agent Cliff Avril if no long-term deal is reached before March 5.
"Franchising him is not a good option for us. The only worse option is playing without him," said Mayhew. The Lions' priority is a long-term extension, but they won't be letting Avril walk if one isn't struck. "Whatever happens with Cliff, it's a business decision," Mayhew added, speaking of Avril's on-and-off threats to hold out. "... I respect his ability to handle business."

So they have March 13 to get a Calvin deal done if they want Tulloch. Avril long term deal in June/July to free ups some room for the draft picks.

Anyone know if the rookie pool for draft picks counts against the cap or do they not count until July when they are actually signed before camp.

they get a seperate allotment for rookie deals...it's a cap within the cap.

for the Lions in 2011 is exactly $4,062,187. Not only that, but the total of all the contracts for all 4 years must be no more then $22,342,030.

Lions 2011 rookie allotment.

Lions 2011 rookie allotment.

Probably will be more in 2012 with it going up every year and the fact the Lions only had 5 picks last year and 7 this year. Some savings going from pick 13, 44 to 23, 55

John Abraham is spouting about wanting 12 million a year....lol , these DEs sure do see $$$$$ signs.

He's insane. No one will give a 34 year old that money.

Average of top 5 DEs is 10.6, why do these guys keep asking for 12? Just because of Charles Johnson? Damn you, Panthers. Leave it up to one stupid team to screw everyone else. Just like the Cardinals. $15 mil annually for Fitz, I'm not sure any WR was even getting $10 mil/year at the time (or is now). WTF

And then the owners lockout the players and play the poverty card.
