Do these announcers not know the rules, or is it me?

Isn't it the bag in fair territory, and it's a fair ball once the ball is to/passed the bag, and so if the ball hits the bag it's always a fair ball?

Because these announcers are talking like it's a judgement call by the umpire if the ball is in fair territory or not when it hits the bag.

Or maybe they're talking about the ump looking to make the judgement about whether the ball hit the bag or not.

Which, in that case, is also kinda goofy - the ball obviously hit the bag.

As long as the ball hits the bag, assuming it was in fair territory the whole time, it's a fair ball. The ump was a little slow on the call.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to be in fair territory the whole time. Balls that go into foul territory and then roll back into fair territory and go beyond the baseline or die in fair territory before reaching the baseline are fair balls.

That's why you see fielders on a little dribbler that they're hoping rollsfoul because it's too late to throw the runner out grab the ball as soon as it rolls foul, to be sure the ball doesn't roll back into fair territory (Verlander did that tonight on a ball that Inge let go, you might have seen).

The ball just has to hit the bag and it can come from foul territory and still be a fair ball if it does hit the bag. Never seen it happen, though.

I suppose that's possible if it had some crazy spin on it, but never saw it b4 either.
