Baseball card pioneer Sy Berger dies

With the card market in the crapper, I sealed and put all my cards away. Hoping my kid can one day benefit from them. Same with my comics.

Cards were to collect, trade and have fun. Add in the Mike Lum and Ed Figueroa you'd get in every pack and it was at it's best. Best Gum EVER :ugh:

Every other pack had a Jim Beauchamp card in it. Finding the stars of the day were very rare. 10 cents a pack got you 10 cards and a stick of gum. We would collect glass bottles and redeem them for cash and in the same store, buy packs of baseball cards. I could spend $1, get 100 cards and have over half being "doubles".

And yes, my Mom threw out all the baseball cards after my brother and I left home. Goodbye Jim Beauchamp!

I never bought a single baseball card. When I was a kid I thought collecting them was a waste of time. Some of my friends got into it...I just wasn't interested in it.

I remember 15 cents. I'd give my best friend's older brother a $1.05 for 7 packs..he could drive at that time. My Mom didn't throw mine out, just flat out gave them away (without asking me). I was still a teenager..thanks Mom.

I can't believe I actually ate that gum..

How much do cards cost now..

The top card in the pack was almost always ruined because of the stupid gum on top of it.

I remember finally getting a Kirk Gibson in like '83 and being so pissed that the gum residue stuck to the card and messed up his face.

I had tons and tons of card, but stopped collecting when all the ultra-fancy styles came out and made them stupidly expensive.

The only card I bought since, was after being at a Tigers game vs. the Yankees, Travis Fryman became the first Tiger to hit for the cycle in 42 years. I actually got my hand on a foul ball he hit right before his homerun. So I went out and bought his rookie card for $15 the next day, I imagine it's next to worthless now though.

EDIT: yup, .99 cents on ebay

In 1990, I bought my nephew a Bo Jackson and Kirk Gibson card for Christmas. Together the were valued over $25 at that time. I even bought myself a Barry Sanders card. I still have the Barry Sanders card. Not sure if my nephew has the two cards. I haven't seen him in 15 years or so.
