before typewriters...

i took typing in high school. I, too, would always look at the keys. Then i started playing games where typing fast was important. That sped me up and got me looking at the screen.

sometimes, though, I type with one finger and I'm pretty damn good at it. I can probably type faster with my one finger than some do using the home keys. Its very useful when you're holding your coffee or beer.

I remember typing class in 7th grade. I struggled with the whole fingers on "asdf - jkl;" thing for a while, but now it's second nature. the class *actually* still used typewriters... but it was around that time my parents bought our first Windows-PC. this was like windows 3.1. That really changed things.

What really pushed me over the line to become a fast typer was a law clerk job for a year prior to law school. I would have to do some secretary work like listening to tapes and transcribing memos. Something about that format, listening to tape & typing that really kicked things to a different level.

I took it for one semester and got up to 80 wpm at my best. Then went years without typing and just within the last 5 years or so have gotten good at it again. My co-worker (male) makes comments about how fast I type and asks if I'm writing a novel when posting here. My anal-retentiveness won't allow any "yptos," so I always have to reread my posts before sending.
