Best Team of the last 50 years

O's, Tigers, Yanks all have a solitary vote.

I went with the homer pick. No one has come close to their first 40 start of the season. And they were a team. Not a collection of superstars.

I went '99 Yankees. The '98 team was better during the regular season, but the '99 team was more of the stupid video game type roster. I think '00 and/or '01 teams might even be a tick better, but they weren't listed, so I went with '99.

This is a great debate though. I think a legit case could be made for the Big Red Machine teams, the '70 O's, the '68, '84 and '87 Tigers, the '89 A's, the '95 Indians, the '95 Braves, the '01 Mariners, the '04 Red Sox and a few others we're probably all missing.

I included only WS winners. I am probably going to do a best that never won poll later (cough cough 1961 Tigers). I also tried whittling the list down some so it would not be too long.

Some great teams here.
I voted for our 68 Tigers the last real true champions before divisions.
The 61 Yankees were unstoppable.
as were the 75 Reds,
our 84 Tigers
98 yankees.
Other teams in the mix,
70 Orioles,
78 yanks
one of the A's teams 73.
not listed, 67 cards.

As much as I loved the '84 Tigers, the '68 team will always be nearest and dearest in my baseball heart. I "lived and died" with each and every comeback win and loss that season....which would become the very last Tigers WS championship season when sadly the 'hoods and businesses within much of the city of Detroit were still alive, vibrant and thriving. I truly miss those years, and didn't realize as a child and teen back then, how very soon they were going to end, the horrible '67 riots during the prior summer notwithstanding.

84 Tigers all the way. What a magical year it was.

84 Tigers with a 4-2-1-0 lead
68 Tigers and 98 Jeters have 2

I didn't vote because I could not see a really clear winner, but surprised the '86 Mets got no love.

Because they won on luck. Pure dumb luck.

108 wins is luck?

I'll have some of what you're smoking please.

God as much as I want to be a homer and pick either Detroit team's that 108 win Red's team was so darn good... Heck all of these teams are rock solid...Its either them or the 109 Yankee team of 1961.. I am waffling on my Red's pick... They had no 20 game winner but six pitchers with over ten wins... The 1961 Yankees had Ace Whitey Ford at 25-4....

How freaking frustrated must the tiger players have been to win 101 games in 1961 and finish 8 games behind the damn Yankees... We would have crushed a 93 win Red's team too that year...

Had they not come back in Game 6 of the 86 NLCS, they would have lost the series. The Mets to a man say that. Then, they won the WS on a fluke inning/collapse by Boston in GM 6 and then another comeback in GM 7. They won, but went 8-5 in the postseason. Compare that to the 84 Tigers (7-1) or 76 Reds (7-0) or other teams.

Just as frustrated and BS that Sept. iirc the Tigers were neck and neck going into a series, maybe a 5 gamer with the yankees and lost all of them. Kaline batted something like .420 those 5 games, it was the Tigers first pennant race since I started to follow them beginning in 54.
I think 67 was worse for me though, losing on the last game of the year, I punched a hole in the wall of my bedroom...can still remember my pop saying "what the frig (he never said fuck, just frig when he was pissed) is wrong with you!!" Had to get a friend to help plaster and paint over it, lol.
yeah 67 sucked more, like 87 or '09 for many of you younger guys.

With 61, I think I would have just chalked it up to losing to a historically great team. 1967 would have been like 2009.
