Bucks 150 Pistons 130 Final

there aren't any teams that play defense anymore.

The league leader in points allowed per game is currently the Cavs. They give up 107 points per game. I went back 10 years and looked at team stats. The leader in the 2012-2013 season was Memphis at 89.3 points per game. But that wasn't an outlier. Every single team in the league gave up fewer points per game than the league leader this year. The worst defensive team in the 2012-2013 season were the Kings. They gave up 105.1 points per game.

Now, it may not just be defense, but the style of offense. Teams shoot way more threes now.

2012 the leader in 3 attempts was 28.9 per game
2022. every team attempts more than 28.9 per game. The Bulls attempt the fewest right at 29 and Golden State the most at 43.3

My conclusion...the 3 pointer has ruined the NBA

I think we're mainly seeing an era of extremely talented shooters, with a higher emphasis on 3-point shooting at all levels. There's a lot more space to cover these days when basically everyone on the floor is an outside threat.

I'm more concerned with the amount of leeway that players and teams have on offense when it comes to officiating. There's a lot of questionable screens, carries, push-offs, etc. that simply aren't called as much these days. On top of that, there's little-to-no benefit to being physical on defense and I wouldn't be surprised if it's normalizing players to shy away on defense to avoid fouls.

The pendulum could swing the other way, but not without some rule changes and more strict officiating. This style of basketball is probably here to stay for a while.

I don't think this is true (better shooters now).

Back to my comparison of this season to 2012-13

2022 team stats for 3 point shooting
best 39.5%
median 36%
average 36%
worst 32.4%

2012
Best 40.3%
median 35.6%
average 36%
worst 30.5% (kind of outlier since 2nd worst was 32.9%)

Teams are just taking more threes.

I was referring more to the pre-Curry era compared to now. 2012 to 2022 increase in attempts is more likely due to a shift in team philosophy on offense across the league.

My point was that threes are only one piece of the puzzle in the non-existent defense we're seeing today.

well, 20 years ago it was 35.4%

1.8 pts out of 1 first. We play in the shitty east. I could argue were worse than San Antonio

I don't think the east is any worse than the west this year. Actually, the east may be better.

As of today, the East is 151-143 vs the west this season.
