Buddy Bell: The Crap Years

Matt Millen had a noticeably worse tenure than Randy Smith.

It's quite possible Matt Millen was the worst franchise executive in the history of the NFL.

Millen was the worst...but I am not sure he was "noticeably" worse than Smith.

Millen at least picked Megatron. Smith did squat for this club except set it back over a decade.

BTW, that article was painful to read. Never post that link again. LOL!

Winning percentages of each should be noticeable differences.

Also, when grading the Tigers in the Smith seasons, look at all the damage control McHale & Smith faced when Schembechler exited.

Bo was probably the worst "overall" Tigers President ever. Not necessarily in Wins and Losses, but in running a franchise. His biggest accomplishments were improving field conditions of minor league parks and adding weight facilities to minor & major parks.

It is easier to get out of the dumps in football due to the even salaries among teams. If Millen had the same results in baseball as a GM as he did in football, he would have set a team back for longer than any other GM in history.

And if you get as many high picks as Millen did, of course you will hit big on one of them. How many did he miss, and if I'm not mistaken, he has the worst winning percentage of any GM in the NFL ever (qualifying mark being 100 games).

The Lions were 9-7 the year before Millen took over. They went 31-81 during his tenure there.

Sorry, talking about Millen gets me a little fired up lol.

Even my accounting class that I have to head to now makes me happier than thinking about Millen.

Comparing Randy Smith to Matt Millen is like comparing Saddam Hussain to Adolph Hitler.

Both were terrible, but it's obvious who was worse.

Randy Smith took over for Joe Klein in 1996. Can't really blame him for 1996, but here are the results:
1996: 109 losses (again, this is the year he took over, so it's the baseline)
1997: 83 losses (+26 games)
1998: 97 losses (-14)
1999: 92 losses (+5)
2000: 83 losses (+9)-Finally back to 1997
2001: 96 losses (-13)
2002: 106 losses (-10)-Fired DD takes over
2003: 119 losses (-13)

Millen:

2000: 9-7 (Millen hired at season's end)
2001: 2-14 (-7)
2002: 3-13 (+1)
2003: 5-11 (+2)
2004: 6-10 (+1)
2005: 5-11 (-1)
2006: 3-13 (-2)
2007: 7-9 (+4)
2008: 0-16 (-7)
Millen fired
2009: 2-14 (+2)

I know it was the roid era and all but damn...6.38 era?

I remembered the pitching being pitiful but no quite that much...

some of the cecil era tigers teams would've been much better with even a shred of pitching.

worst randy smith trade imo

luis gonzales for karim garcia

gonzales promptly posted five straight 900 OPS seasons.

Trading Fryman and Nevin were awful as well.
