I've been doing some reading and thinking about this for some time. And now is as good of a time to say a few things about all of this about Cabrera.
1st Cabrera should be able to field most of the baseballs hit to 3rd as he is able to field the ones that are hit to 1st.
The real difference will be just how many he will get to. As a first baseman does not have as many hit to his left B/C of holding the runner on at first Also B/C of there being more righthanded batters, Baseballs are not hit to first as hard or as many. But yea at times they get there and like right now as well at times. Throwing to first is the other thing that 3rd baseman have to do more.
2nd The real problem really does not occur until next season when V-Mart returns? For that matter when he recovers from his injury.
2A V-Mart's recovery from said injury will be the big issue then and when! This could all become mute.IE A bad injury contract, like the Tigers need another one!!!
3 Should Cabrera not be able to handle 3rd, IMO rightfield should be tried as it has less field to cover.
4 Now I know some out there will find this crazy. BUT IMO it should be looked at. Considering Cabrera's past the possibility of trading MC is now an option, after this season. Look at it this way with 3 years left his value would be quite high in trades. And really how many out there really feel he can be resigned to a contract with the Tigers in 4 years at age I believe,32. Think about this; should he stay as good as he is and play out his contract his next contract could be lightyears out of the Tigers reach.
4A Moving Cabrera is no easy task too soon and you could lose a winning chance at a WS. Too late and lose value. Resign and good things and bad things could happen. Length of contract becomes an issue.
5 As for right now the Tigers have all the options in front of them and this season to find the answers to what to do in 2013.

Best thing Cabrera makes a return back to 3rd, wow then alls well, except, well we'll been down that road before. At least we got AA to catch this time.

The only way Cabrera leaves the Tigers is if Illitch passes away before his contract runs up and their next owner is cheap.

If Mr. I is still alive he won't let Cabrera or Verlander play for another team.

I don't mind Miguel in RF as they do get less chances out there but only as long as Inge isn't the 3B option. I agree, Miguel isn't getting traded. I bet he'll be our DH and be happy about it. He's that kind of person.

Prince isn't getting signed, Miggy isn't getting traded :) None of you out there, including me have any idea what is going to happen down the road, things can change in a day, like VMart getting hurt. Can we take the chance on another 6 or 7 yrs with Miggy when he is 32 and wants another 150M ? Lots can happen in a year or two, so yes, he could be traded.

Of course there are no absolutes. Just like you can't conclude Miguel gets 150 plus million in 6-7 years.

I don't understand why people are so concerned with looking 4-5 years down the road, either with contracts or the possibility of the Illitch family selling the franchise. Are things so good right now that you have to look that far ahead to get your doom and gloom fix?

Its not gloom and doom. Its conversation, try it sometime. You might like it.

I have seen no indications that the Ilitch family would sell off the Red Wings or the Tigers after the passing (not soon I hope) of Mr. I.

Just because they are not as visible as Steinbrenner's sons were does not mean they don't share Mike's passion for sports.

I actually hope he put something in his will about it.

The real issue is not 4 to 5 years down the road. Things could come to a head as soon as 2013 when V-Mart returns from his injury for a whole season. Should Cabrera not be able to play another position other than 1st. Then the Tigers would have to use V- Mart as a catcher and Fielder and/or Cabrera as the DH and 1st baseman And then AA sets.
One way or another when V-Mart returns Cabrera will have to play somewhere for all 4 to fit in this current lineup.

Tigers have 2012 to find a place for Cabrera, or some kind of trade will have to be made between 2012 offseason and 2013.
1 Fielder will be here for some time with his length of contract!
2AA needs to stay in place for catcher.
3Of course V-Mart needs to return healthy for any thing to happen.
4Cabrera being able to play 3rd or a corner OF fixes many future problems.
5 Time is still on the Tigers side. All I pointed out is what could happen in the foreseeable future. And that foreseeable future is closer than most think. As close as opening day 2013, when things could be push come to shove.

Really, really the best thing that could happen is that Cabrera can play 3rd. And IMO he should be able to in 2012 and a few more seasons. Should he be able to play in 2013 and 2014, V-Mart contract will be gone then. Moving V-Mart after 2013 could be the right move then?

Like I've said time is on the Tigers side for now. And really this thread is about ;ifs, ands,or whatever, and to find out what everyone else thinks.
So far it's been good reading, and move time forward towards Spring Training Day. O BTW 2 more days till report day for Pitchers and Catchers, and the start of answers of how all this will get work out!

Absolutely.

I have read that his kids aren't interested in owning the sports teams. Not sure how true this is...but if they aren't as passionate about the teams as Mr I is then it would be better off for the fans if they sold the teams.

Why would they trade Miguel but keep the much older Vmart?

The only thing I have ever seen is speculation from people who think because you don't see his kids at every press conference like Steinbrenner's were, that they must not care much for teams.

For all we know they may be bigger sports fanatics than Mr. I was.

Also, if they were really against the sports idea, you think they would have talked him out of trying to buy the Pistons, if they would have likely had to sell them again in a few years.

No, I remember some years ago (maybe 8-10) that his kids are not interested. Maybe from MI himself, I don't remember. From what I understand his son is ahead of Ilitch Holdings and his daughter in some way just are not interested in the baseball team.

I've spent some time with Mike Jr. before but it was in 05'-06' before the Tigers were good again. All he cared about was the Redwings though. It's quite possible that he has changed that stance since the Tigers' resurgence.

Resurgence? They made the playoffs once, then missed for 4 years and then another playoffs. Not sure that's a resurgence. Regardless, he's just not interested in the Tigers' , whether they win or lose.

Compared to what the Tigers had been, I would say that is a resurgence.

Well I don't better play and more enjoyable but its not the NYY. 2 playoffs in 6 years, eh. Nonetheless, he still doesn't want to be
Part of the Tigers' organization.

I would much prefer keeping Miggy over Prince, but Prince's 9 year 200M+ contract makes it so that it obviously would be more difficult to deal him, and makes Miggy the more tradeable and/or expendable if both can't be retained sometime in the near or far future, oh well.
