Calvin Has Officially Retired

CJ and Barry are arguably the best two players in Lions history and both left under less than desirable circumstances. This could reflect poorly on the organization.

Stop lol. Barry is still a huge part of this organization and he has explained ad nauseum why he retired early. He wanted to walk away from the game HEALTHY. Yes, he didn't like the direction the team was going and it made his retirement easier but there was no animosity.
Now with CJ this sounds like it's over money. Chump change too lol, so Calvin needs to stfu about it.
Stop looking for a story when there is none there...

There are very few Joe Montana's and Tom Brady's in the league.

Even Jerry Rice left the 49'ers under less than desirable circumstances. It happens.

I don't think it reflects badly on the Lions anymore than any other team. Randy Moss, Adrian Peterson, and Chris Carter were arguably three of the Vikings best players, and each one left the team in controversy.. less than desireable.

Very few players win a bunch of rings and retire gracefully. Normally they get thrown down the elevator shaft.

I think why some feel it is a story is both of these guys left with plenty of gas left in the tank. iIrc, Barry was in a feud with the Lions for years before making up. Didn't he want to be released but the Lions forced his hand? I don't remember the details....it was a long time ago.

Don't get me wrong...I am 100% behind both of these guys having the right to leave while they still have their health. I wish more players would make their money and GTFO while they can still walk. It just adds to the Lions legacy of being a joke of a franchise when the two best players in franchise history leave they way those two left.

Injuries. Lions were playoff teams the season after Barry and Calvin left. They had no reason to leave other then injuries. They didn't leave because the Lions were a bad organization (at the time).

Barry did dislike Bobby Ross though. Calvin loved Caldwell as most players do. Calvin could have played better at the end of 2014 and early 2015 too.

Way too much attention being paid to a retired player and what he thinks and does.

Calvin is no longer a Lion. I don't care what camp he's in or who he's helping. I don't care what he thinks of his bonus being paid back or doesn't. I don't care one bit what the organization thinks of him either.

He was one hell of a player, and I miss watching him dominate. His entire playing career was spent with our team, and I love that. But that career is over now, and he's off doing his thing.

I have a great deal of respect for the man, and I hope he's enjoying his retirement, but beyond that, I just don't care what he's doing or saying.

It was cute when he was on dancing with the stars. But ya, beyond that i dont really care what hes doing with his life now....i can imagine, and you hear about it all the time....its hard to live a life after being an athlete for so long. So let him be and if hes enjoying being around football and being involved with a camp....great for him.

I will say i was surprised by seeing him make the headlines by stating he wasnt happy with how the lions organization treated him on the way out.....that is completely out of character for him. Even if he felt that way i wouldnt really expect him to have said that. IMO it has to go well beyond 320k....which probably is pretty meaningless to him especially since hes smart enough to understand he didnt fulfill his obligation so paying money back was probably the right thing to do. Kinda petty for the lions to demand it gets paid back....id agree. Especially since their talking about pocket change.

Barry, Avril, Delmas, CJ, Suh, Fairley....we just dont keep our star players happy. Hopefully that changes with Quin and just another point that proves how toxic and shitty mayhew and millen were.

That's the company explanation. He actually wanted to quit the Lions three years earlier than he actually did.

The Lions made the playoffs after Calvin. It wasn't talent or the organization problems or monetary (he was paid a huge second deal after a big old CBA first deal). It was injuries. And Calvin was contemplating retirement after an 11-5 season before 2015. He and Stafford both said so.

The injuries were too much for him. Lions get the short end of the stick and only get Calvin for 9 years. Really Aaron Rodgers only deserves 9 years in the league or the kid beater Peterson. Calvin deserved a healthy Jerry Rice career but didn't get it.

This had nothing do with the Lions being a bad organization. Plus at the time there was organization change so Calvin didn't know much about Wood and Quinn. Wood and Quinn owed him nothing. All Calvin did for them was retire right before free agency.

Why would AR only deserve 9 years in the league?

CJ was awesome but imo he doesnt crack the top 5 of great Lions.

Montana actually finished in KC. Pretty good those 2 seasons too.. \

I agree, many players leave for whatever reason and go elsewhere..
