cap raised

This should give the Lions about $7.7 million in cap room overall, about $5+ million in cap room if you include rookie contracts.

A Suh extension could still give them quite a bit of room (another $10 million?).

Suh extension can give them 6-8 million.

This is pretty big news. That extra 4 million can get you some decent free agents. For instance Quin and Bush combined for 4 million in cap room last year.

Good news for the Lions...of course every team will have the extra cap room to compete for free agents. This also allows the Lions to just let Suh play this year out if they don't want to extend him.

Good, lets get a DB or DE in FA and not have to worry about it in the draft.

I'd like for them to let Suh play out his contract and then try to get a manageable yearly cap hit (with a new contract) instead of all this backloaded stuff. Fuck Roc Nation Sports.

You risk the chance of losing Suh if you do that. However, that might be what's necessary to get this team cap friendly for the future.

Personally, with a little extra cap room....if they do extend Suh.....I'd like to see them make a run at an experienced #2 WR. No more guessing games in the draft. Decker or Maclin. Get a promising slot guy in the middle rounds and a DE and CB or S at the top of the draft.

Imo, we'd start hating Decker. Not sure he's the type of player who works here.

No doubt.

Not familiar with some of this like most of you but if we let Suh play out this season, and he doesn't want to resign before 2015 can we give him a tender, 1st and 3rd for example?

Nope he gone unless a last second deal before free agency or thenbidding war. Still on the hook for 9.1 million too in cap space. Would get 3rd round comp pick in 2016. Extending Suh right now is the best option.

Only way you trade Suh is if you find out within the next two months (by draft day) if he is hell bent on testing free agency.

Great news. Makes it much easier to let suh play out this year. Going to be fun watching him play for his next contract. Time will tell if that contract will be here or if he will go after the biggest $ amount. With Jay Z rep, I would say enjoy the last year of suh in a lions uniform.

still a $9.1M cap hit if he leaves after next year?

Yes

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/detroit-lions/ndamukong-suh/

He has a player option for next season, however the remaining guaranteed money still counts against the cap in 2015 whether he plays here or not.

According to Spotrac (and if he doesn't sign an extension)
Plays here: 13.2MM cap hit
Plays elsewhere: 9.7MM cap hit

And LKP has been trying to tell us that Suh doesn't have the Lions by the balls!

While unlikely, I should also mention that in the event that Suh is traded or cut, the cap figures look like

Traded/cut before June 1, 2014: ~19.5MM cap hit in 2014, 0 in 2015
Traded/cut after June 1, 2014: ~9.7MM cap hit in both 2014 and 2015

Okay, thank you.

I just hope he didn't break the bank..

6 of one, half dozen of the other..

Wow, I never noticed that. That's makes an extension even more costly than I originally thought, in terms of future cap hits.

We can't keep doing this. We need to take the huge hit this year and another high amount next year. This convinces me Suh is gone.
