cap raised

The game is simple. Get a qb and get to the qb. If suh is going to get paid that much he better start producing like it. Blah blah wreaks havoc blah blah double teams blah blah blah blah. The bottom line is we didn't sack the qb enough....so if youre saying suh did tge best he can do and ate up space caused doubles etc....then everyone else on the line must really suck ass. Hes not worth 15 mil per.

But I thought you could put anyone next to Suh and he would get double digit sacks. At least thats what I was told when Avril left, Suh made him and he could easily be replaced.

ansah had 8 as a rookie in limited/rotational play time. Theres no doubt he can grow to be a double digit sack guy.

Ansah is a special talent I will agree with that, my main point is that if Suh is suppose to be this unstopable force that makes everyone around him better why did they collect the least amount of sacks at the DE postion in the NFL? I`d rather pay a pro-bowl DE 13 million a year over Suh or any DT 13 million per year any day of the week.

totally agree with you...only part I disagree was avril getting 10+ mil. Ansah should pan out to be the better player and he will be making peanuts for years. Was the right decision at the time since mayhew fucked up and didn't extend him early.

UNFORTUNATELY it's not that simple. Two options: 1.) Pay Suh lots of money, or 2.) Release Suh and pay lots of money.

Technically the money is already paid in option 2. You account for 18.2 million on your cap, but that is money already in Suh's pocket.

And they won't release him. Trade him is worst case scenario (as he decides he doesn't want to stay with Lions, Lions will know by May).

You don't trade away the best DT in the game because of money. You extend him and create more cap space.
You want to trade someone? Trade Fairley and get value back immediately. I'm a Fairley fan but this move makes the most sense. You trade him and he can be replaced by a wayyyy cheaper option. He's not putting up monster numbers and he's going to demand a big contract soon. Trade his ass....i'm all for it.

2 issues. Hes not the one killing the books or signing jay z in prep for his fa. 2, we have no one behind him. Curse of the no depth Gm yet again!

That's an option too. He probably gives up a one first down a game on encroachment calls alone..

Question is what would it cost to sign Suh?

At a minimum he knows he has a geno Atkins type waiting for him if he plays out this year. With the increased cap this year, another modest one next year teams will have money to spend. I could see a 20 million signing bonus and a total of 5 years 60 million.

Would he accept that this year probably not. He has 12.5 million comin his way in terms of base salary. So if he plays out this year, signs as a free agent next year could get 36 million over the next two years. (12.5 million this year, 20 million signing bonus next year, 3.5 million base next year).

A player of his caliber doesn't have to worry about not being signed next year, even with injury, a team will offer him the geno Atkins level contract based one his play the last couple years.

Best case this year he would accept is a 5 year/65 million contract with 25 million signing bonus.

Even that kind of contract he's still making less the first two years, 32 million in this scenario. (25 million signing, 3 million base this year, 4 million base next year)

So he makes 16 million more this year, but 4 million less over two years.

With that contract his cap hit is still 17 million this year (9 million dead, 5 million signing bonus, 3 million base)

So we save 5 million this year, but we are also committed to 18 million cap hit next year. Not sure who is up for FA within the next two years, but you can say goodbye to them if we sign Suh to an extension.

Look at the entire cap committments before you make a statement like that. Don't have to say goodbye to anyone. 11 million under in 2015 with Suh at 17 in 2015 and counting this years draft at 8 million less any free agents year 2 numbers.

Rob Sims, Raiola and Joique Bell by the way are the only unrestricted free agents. Maybe Fairley depending on if they give him the 5th year option.

Plenty of other options, restructures or Jason Jones/Houstons (6.3 million) cuts if you like Sims/Bell better.

I lose Fairley all day every day before I lose Suh. And I cut Jason Jones before I lose Fairley. Talking 2 drafts to replace Jones/Houston. Many want a CB this year anyway and Devin Taylor could be the replacement on the roster by 2015 season (his 3rd year in the league).

I would offer suh a 6yr contract. The first 4 years all guanteed at 48 M.
Ist yr.......8M SB.....$4 base..cap hit $15.1..saves $7.3M
2015.....$11 bonus convert to SB...$1..base..cap hit $14.27
2016.....$2 bonus convert to SB.....$10 base...cap hit..$14.03
2017...... Same...... Cap hit ......$14.70
Last two years is fluff and only have $9.3 of dead money
