Wow, I never noticed that. That's makes an extension even more costly than I originally thought, in terms of future cap hits.
We can't keep doing this. We need to take the huge hit this year and another high amount next year. This convinces me Suh is gone.
cant franchise him either the following year or his cap number becomes 28 mil.
worst case is still not even bad.
5 year 65 million deal (25 guaranteed, 20 from a signing bonus). That's 13 per year. 2 million more per than Atkins got. Talking DE money now. Charles Johnson, Clay Matthews etc
1 base +4 signing+9.1=14.1
4 base +4 singing+9.1=17.1
10 base+4 signing=14
13 base +4 signing=17
17 base +4 signing=21 million
20 signing bonus and first two base years guaranteed. That's 25 million guaranteed.
Give him a new deal again before year 5, since year 5 is not guaranteed.
Wed get better production if we just signed a 13 mil per year stud DE and drafted Jernigan at 10 this year.

I can't see Watt or Quin actually being available ni 2015. Texans and Rams will do what it takes to not let them hit the market.
JPP is way too inconsistent. And again Giants probably won't let him go.
Avril and old Osi or some 3-4 DEs.
And Jernigan is no Suh.
Jernigan is nowhere close to suh....but would be paid 11 mil less. I just dont think the highest paid player on your defense should be a dt.
It's always good to have a guy who takes on multiple offensive lineman. It helps those defensive end..hopefully our new coaches take advantage and have some nice blitz packages.

Suh produces close to a DE. He's a "game changer" despite the Lions win/loss record. Really he should get 11-12 per but he can make a case for DE money at 13 per.
Say we let Suh walk, which is proven unnecessary, but that 17 million in cap space (per my 2015 numbe projections), I don't think a bunch of mid tier level free agents is the way to fix the Lions. Keeping Suh and drafting well and being smart who you give the mid tier contracts.
What the Lions are going to do is going to change who they give the mid tier money too (the Bush, Quins, Tullochs, Burlesons of the world).. Delmas (knees) and Burleson (age) didn't deserve it. So they got cut and will be replaced in draft or free agency. In a couple of years, Bush and Tulloch will be old (but we're talking 2/3 drafts to replace those guys). 2015 Jones and Houston(who most hate anyway) are highly cuttable especially if we draft a CB (6.3 million in space). The issue is not Suh, it's being smart with the mid level contracts and drafting well.
houston isn't cuttable
