Changes for the Off-Season/Next Year

Some of mine that need to happen:

-Some mix of Drummond/Jackson have to go. This formula isn't working, see what you can get at this point.
-SVG either accepts the coaching role or the GM role, not both.
-Let KCP go. He's not worth the 20 million that he's going to get.
-Truly be a BAD basketball team and pick in the top 3. This whole picking between 8-12 stuff has to stop.
-Let guys like Ellenson play and see what you have with them.

I agree with everything except SVG being a GM. He can stay on as coach, but not the GM. He is terrible.

I'm just not sure . Team was 33-33 with a injured Jackson, and KCP missed 6 games which is no big deal but I agree with D. We should let him walk. I think Svg will get another year and that's it. We are a bad 4-12 from the playoffs. 8-8 and we are tied 9-7 and we are in. There are many losses I wish we had back. Not sure what way to go.

Bob, if this team was going to make the playoffs, it was going to be as an 8 seed in a very weak East. They'll never win the way they are currently constructed. The entire soup is cold, it needs to be blown up.

The players just don't have a lick of chemistry, there's no one that's even CLOSE to being a star. Drummond's a nice big man, but that's about it.

I agree with most of what's been said already.

Reggie-he's lost a step, which is unpalatable for a team that can't generate offense. Get doctors in there and determine if it is a health thing or permanent. If permanent, move him for a defensive specialist.

Drummond-either he commits to shooting free throws underhand or he gets traded. There is so much left that could develop, but he never well if he remains terrified of getting fouled (this is a much bigger issue than just missing the foul shots). I'd look to get a top 10 pick for him.

KCP-at least check what his demands are first, and slap him with the qualifying offer. If he finds a team to offer him more than 12 million per year, let him walk. If not, no more than three years on his next contract (think Stuckey's rfa contract). As long as he's cheap enough to trade, I don't mind bringing him back while the team is rebuilt, he's not so good that we can't lose with him, and at least has the potential to be valuable down the line.

Morris-trade him. He's actually on a great contract, and he's a perfectly serviceable player. But that's all he's capable of being. I'd rather watch Stanley build a brick house every night than remain committed to Morris being just good enough not to lose the game. He's probably better than the backup sf/pf on several contenders. I'd take a late first dinner for Morris in a heartbeat.

I don't see much else the team can do in the short term. Harris isn't ideal, but he's arguably the best player on the team. Luer makes way to much money, and he's likely untradable. I love Boban, and am ready to hand over the starting center shot to him.

Ideally with trades, we could walk out of the draft with Malik Monk (Drummond trade), Frank Ntilikina (our pick), and Caleb Swanigan (Morris trade). Moving Reggie and letting KCP walk opens big minutes for the rookie guards, and Swanigan plays backup c. That team should lose a ton of games, but have the potential to be much better than what we have now.

This is the kind of short term thinking that had Joe driving the team into the ground. This isn't a win now team, why are they focused on trying to mortgage the future for some non star vet who won't move the needle?

Gores also knows nothing about basketball. Honestly I'm not surprised Gores liked him. As just a coach, I love SVG. I think he consistently gets more out of his teams defensively than expected, and he was ahead of the game with his 4 shooters strategy. The real problem is that's he's a known commodity as a GM, and a bad one. He doesn't understand contract value on a team scale. That leads to his teams having a bunch of generally fairly paid vets, but almost no one providing surplus value (stars, rookies, low priced vets).

The only way you can compete these days is be a great destination or draft 2 all NBA players and grab a FA or two. The Pistons are screwed.

Look, the development of the Warriors (which was almost entirely due to great management and coaching) has changed the landscape of the game. There's no real dispute about that. The three stars approach isn't actually new, teams have been trying it since way before the Lebron Heat. It's just that we haven't had a team like GS since Jordan's Bulls. The 00s and early 10s simply didn't have that uber-dominant team that everybody had to load up for or tank around.

The biggest problem is the age of players on GS. Curry-Durant-Green are all under 30. There's no reason to think we'll see their games drop off in the next 3 years, which is almost an entire rookie cycle. Thompson is nice, though overrated when he gets thrown in with those first three, but that hardly matters because every good vet knows where to play if they want a ring - they'll never have to worry about filling depth with decent players.

The Pistons are in a really dumb spot right now. They have absolutely no path to loading up and trying to compete against GS (or Cleveland, or Houston, or San Antonio, or Boston). They are capped out with mediocre players who are too good to really tank. Given this team is basically an entire roster away from contending (Drummond probably the only one young enough to be around when these super teams start getting old), they SHOULD be trying to tank for top picks and try to build their own set of stars that way (both GS and OKC managed that, though OKC broke it up early).

That is really not that much different than historically. The Lakers had Magic, Kareem, and Worthy. The Celtics had Bird, McHale, and Parish. The Sixers had Dr. J, Moses Malone and then take your pick with Mo Cheeks or Andrew Toney. The Bad Boys were built a bit differently with more overall balance and the emphasis on defense. The Bulls were a bit different too since they sort of had 2 with Jordan and Pippen (not going to put guys like Horace Grant, Kukoc, or Rodman up there as a legitimate third star).
