CIA torture report

Zero Dark Thirty was a Hollywood movies based on the CIA. How accurate did you expect it to be?

Not entirely accurate but a bunch of dumb asses will just shrug and take it as fact. Theyll think we got ubl because we tortured al Qaeda operatives

it's one of those things... they throw out the taglines about it being made with "CIA inside information" and "based on a true story" and all that shit... and it becomes something more than just a movie, it's propaganda. It's not aimed at changing the opinion of public intellectuals, as those people will see right through it's BS, but the harm it does in swaying the opinions of those too young or dumb to know better is the problem.

it's not enough to just shrug it off as harmless. I think it needs to be attacked, and that cuntwad who directed it & the writers who collaborated on it deserve to be thrown out of the academy.

exactly.

I liked the NYTimes description. Zero Dark Thirty milked the practice of torture for drama while sidestepping the ethical debate. They were careful not to say torture helped find Bin Laden the same way COSMOS was careful not to say the Catholic Church killed Bruno for his scientific theories...all while convincing casual viewers that that's exactly what they were saying.

I guess I look at it differently. To me the movie was just a movie....make believe based on actual events. I know going in it's highly fictionalized, because they need to give a handful of characters the illusion that they are the focus, when usually in cases like that it's hundreds of people.

So when I watch it, I view it totally as an entertainment source, I don't worry about it's use as a propaganda tool. Zero Dark Thirty, The Hurt Locker, and Last Man Standing; all of those I felt were entertaining in a watch them 1 time way. so I don't usually dissect it to the point of factuality or propaganda otherwise I could probably never watch another movie ever without applying the same ideas to them.

As far as it needing to be attacked, and the director/writers thrown out of the academy...lol okay

At the very least, they should be banned from the Detroit Sports Forum Message Boards.

EDIT: Un poquito factoidito: The Academy is a small, private and very exclusive organization. Most people working in "the trade" don't have anything to do with the academy.

It's more than likely that none of the collaborators on Zero Dark Thirty has any direct association with The Academy.

Interestingly, the Academy is 94% white, 77% male and the average is 62 years old...corresponding almost identically with the demographics of the viewership of Fox News...

...although I doubt many members of the Academy spend much time watching Fox News.

The worst part of the report is that they don't recommend any punishment for those involved.

I wonder what Cheney's response would be to this?

I had no idea if they were or weren't members of the academy, and I don't really know what it is. that was more of a rhetorical flourish than a statement of fact from me.

LOL - you have become that which you despise. Should we attack you too, and have you thrown out of the academy too?

BTW If your answer has anything to do with you not being part of the academy, I will fall out of my chair laughing.

Do whatever you want. I don't make the rules around here.

Because of this thread, I have added Zero Dark Thirty to my Netflix queue.

Apparently there is also a spoof of Zero Dark Thirty titled Zero Dark Dirty, starring the Cory who still isn't dead, the Stallone who wasn't Rocky, and the acting Baldwin brother whose first name nobody can remember.

Thank God for small favors.

I assume you will continue to do "whatever you want", so what's good for the goose . . .

Start a thread called "why I hate michchamp and think he is a bad person." Or better yet a blog. Everyday you can write a new blog post about why I am terrible and all my opinions are evil

Hey that sounds like a good idea. Although hate is too strong a word, of course, I don't hate anyone.

I bet it would have a few followers - in fact, I am betting you wouldn't be able to stay away yourself. Champ, lately, you are nothing if not predictable.

You bait me, I bait you, seems pretty normal. You disagree?

That's not true. These movies made with pentagon (or in this case CIA) cooperation aren't just movies. I can draw some clear distinctions between this and The usual Hollywood fare or even war movies like Platoon or Patton that aren't made with oversight from the potomac

I wasn't baiting you, I was commenting in this thread, which you weren't even a part of until you showed up and starting talking shit.

this was basically an infomercial for advanced interrogation techniques. like champ said, CIA cooperation makes it a little more than simple fiction in the eyes of most people.

I wasn't talking about you baiting me in this thread particularly. In this case, I baited you with my first post - and you took it. It was a joke aimed at pointing out once again how you do the same things you whine about concerning those dastardly right wing zealots. You once again place everyone who might disagree with you in that same group.

It wouldn't matter one scintilla, if people acknowledged that torture is wrong in every way, you would jump on them if there was any qualification of that view, or disagreement with some of the "facts" presented.

You can continue to do that (doing whatever you want), and I can continue to call you on it (doing whatever I want).

See how that works? :*)

The CIA Film and Television Collaboration/Cooperation Unit actually IS directly associated with the Academy of Motion Pictures Sciences and Arts, and is part of the Oscar nominating/awarding process.
