Calvin Johnson - WR - Lions

The Detroit Free Press reports the Lions are still hoping to sign Calvin Johnson to a long-term extension.
The sides have been talking all offseason, but an agreement before the start of free agency on Tuesday is unlikely. Johnson is currently set to count $22 million against the cap during the final year of his rookie deal, putting all the pressure to get a contract done on the Lions. Any extension would likely make Johnson the highest-paid receiver in the league.

This is very bad news

Cj holds all the cards IMO. Only ? is how much he is willing to b a team ayer for chance at a ring.

Yep. Other problem is that they cant tag him next year. Its a bad situation

on ESPN rumor central says they are trying to restructure suh and staffs deal.

The system is broken when you cant have a guy play out his entire rookie contract then be able to tag him to keep him....thays what the tag is meant for. Dumb...

Team player? And there are several other teams more ready for a SB than Detroit.

He's your best player you pay the man.

I know he has every right to squeeze every penny he can out of the deal, but those pennies come out of other roster spots, not the Lions management's. So if he wants to win a ring, he needs to think about who the Lions are financially able to bring in. Not saying he doesn't deserve the money, just how it impacts his chance to wear a SB ring.

The lack of a rookie cap, and its subsequent timing of initiation, f'd the Lions. How much could the Lions afford to give CJ if Staff and Suh were under the rookie cap? Nonetheless, they have to play the hand they have been dealt. While it would suck, trading CJ, Staff, and / or Suh for picks would yield a massive cost savings with which the team could potentially reach the SB faster than by trying to have 3 guys eating up a HUGE chunk of cap room. I love what those guys have done to turn the team into contenders, but getting to that next level will require more than they alone can do.

you're a moron.

But in 2013 and beyond you save that to use toward picks and multiple other holes. Could get OL, CB, and LB holes filled for that money. Individually CJ rules, but he alone can only do so much.

22 million dollar hit in 2012...seriously gimp...understand it.

they would be crippled for the next season.

You keep on bringing up a chance at a ring like he can't get that anywhere else.

? not sure why u said that. cj could def help any team get a ring. just saying the lions will b harder due to cap issues vs needs. they only have 120.6 to work with. how much of that is tied up in suh, staff, and cj? doesn't leave much for 50 other guys. league minimum guys aren't known to be great at filling holes.

all i am saying is the way for ANY team to make the most of the overall cap is to maximize use of rookie cap. only exception is obviously QB, but even that eventually can be considered as well. it isnt worth 25% of total cap to go to any QB because rest of the team will not be any good (no, NOT saying staff alone makes that...saying if QB contracts were to reach that level).

22 million against the cap if not restructered.

7.081 million dollar hit if traded or cut....I worded it wrong.

don't matter....he isn't getting traded or cut

14 mill base salary doesnt go against the cap...only $3 Mill is SB prorated, not sure what the other 4 Mill is...but he isnt going anywhere
