With his future in doubt and reporters asking whether he thinks about being traded, CJ replied he "wants to win here".

That's a positive, but going back to prior discussions in another thread, he needs to recognize his high contract is hurting the team's overall talent level.

If he wants to win in Detroit, he should really consider a contract that pays him about 75% what he currently makes so that money can be put toward a better team. Now, in his twilight years he wants to win a SB.

I like CJ, but this needs to be something he comes to terms with. And I'm not talking a restructure, I'm talking a pay cut.

If the salary cap was not involved, fine...get every cent possible. With salary caps, the superstars need to grasp how a highest level contract hurts their chance to win a championship.

They tried to trade him earlier in the week..Just too much money is owed. And apparently it's "smart" to try and get as much money as you can :hehe:

Nonetheless, if they were close I could understand but he has no incentive to take a pay cut on a bad team.

see...he is a super star on the old CBA and it isn't smart for him to take a pay cut. There are only a handful of players where I would say it is smart to take less money so OTHER players on your team can make more. Very few IMO

That's why someone like CJ will never win a SB. I know we don't agree but if someone has made more money than they'd ever need, a couple mill doesn't seem like a big deal.

CJ was destined to never win a SB the minute the Lions drafted him!

I don't know how the contracts work in the NFL compared to MLB, but is it possible for Calvin to work out a restructure so they have to pay less and pay it later where maybe it would be dead money as the term applies, but not as bad as the dead money total as of now?

That's why we don't have Suh anymore.. They restructured so much that we couldn't franchise him when the time came. it would have cost 26.9m for Suh for one year. Comparison, top DE Watt is at 16.6 per season in his new deal..

CJ's cap numbers are so high now another restructure might just kill Detroit. Someone else probably has a better understand about cap numbers and restructures than I do.. So maybe they'll be around to answer those questions.

Thanks Mitch.

No one takes pay cuts to make their team better....except Tom Brady. They may restructure and get more money later...or shift it to a signing bonus. But not a pay cut.

Sure. My argument was I'd rather play for Tom Brady for 20m guaranteed than for Detroit at 24m guaranteed.

Cj isn't worth more than he was a couple years ago. He doesn't do what we expect him to do when he's not catching the ball. ...meaning teams used to plan for him and shade 3 guys to his side. No one does that anymore. The whole idea that he opens the field up for everyone else is dead.

I know. Teams single cover him now. It's sad. Part CJ, part Matt, and part OC.

Stafford and CJ account for more than 1/3 of the cap next year.
