Coaching openings

I'm not sure about that report but heck, there are a lot of teams that would be interested.

I get that but what does it say about Pagano? Hold on, Chuck - we're checking Payton's status.

Good news Chuck, we want you.

Right but you could look at it as a negotiation strategy as well. I still can't believe the Colts won 8 games and were in the playoff hunt week 17. The GM has got to get Luck some protection.

Guys like Payton don't become available very often so I can see the huge interest, especially for teams that have good or potentially good QB's.

The thing is, did the Colts get permission to talk to him?

They wouldn't need permission since he's still under contract for a few more years. He would be traded.

"Hey, um, is Sean Payton available? He is? Excellent! You want WHAT?!!" <click>

..."You know Chuck, we've always loved having you here, and we really want you to stick around..."

If Lions ax Caldwell, here are top coaching candidates

ROB MAADDI, AP Pro Football Writer10:36 a.m. EST January 5, 2016

Teams looking for a new head coach will find plenty of qualified candidates.

Picking the right one is the tough part for the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans.

Chip Kelly, Adam Gase and Mike Shanahan are just a few of the hot names.

From proven winners to successful coordinators to Super Bowl champions, here?s a list of some of the top candidates:

THE COORDINATORS

Adam Gase: Chicago Bears offensive coordinator and former Denver Broncos OC from Marshall and Michigan State. Has helped Jay Cutler and Peyton Manning have success. Dolphins, Browns and Eagles have interest.

Sean McDermott: Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator since 2011. Former Eagles DC. His defense has ranked in top 10 four straight years. Eagles, Giants could be right fit.

Josh McDaniels: New England Patriots OC since 2012. Former Broncos head coach, going 11-17. Has worked with Tom Brady for all but three seasons. Dolphins, Eagles possibilities.

Teryl Austin: Detroit Lions DC past two seasons. Led second-ranked unit in 2014. Browns, Eagles, Dolphins have interest.

Hue Jackson: Cincinnati Bengals OC this season. Went 8-8 as Oakland Raiders head coach in 2011. Has coached offense/defense. Andy Dalton had best season under him. Browns, 49ers, Titans possibilities.

Matt Patricia: Patriots DC since 2012. Has been on Bill Belichick?s staff since 2004 and previously coached offensive side. Dolphins, Browns possibilities.

Darrell Bevell: Seattle Seahawks OC since 2011. Was hot name past couple of years. Helped Russell Wilson have his best season this year. Teams have to wait to interview him. Titans would be nice fit.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Anthony Lynn: Buffalo Bills running backs coach and assistant HC. Has been RB coach since 2003 with four teams. Dolphins have interest.

Doug Marrone: Jacksonville Jaguars assistant HC. Was 15-17 as Bills head coach in 2013-14. Browns, Eagles, Dolphins have interest.

FORMER COACHES

Mike Shanahan: Won two Super Bowls with Broncos. Dolphins, 49ers possibilities.

Chip Kelly: Was 20-12 first two seasons before 6-9 cost him job in Philadelphia. Titans, 49ers, Browns possibilities.

Mike Smith: Led Atlanta Falcons to playoffs four times in seven seasons. Dolphins interviewed him Monday.

Jim Schwartz: Was 29-51 as Lions coach in 2009-13. Was DC in Buffalo in 2014 when Bills had fourth-ranked defense. Browns have interest.

CURRENT COACHES

Sean Payton: New Orleans Saints HC past 10 seasons. Won one Super Bowl. Has two years remaining on contract. Giants, 49ers, Eagles would have interest if he?s available.

John Harbaugh: Baltimore Ravens HC past eight seasons. Won one Super Bowl, six winning years. No reason to think he?s leaving unless Eagles make a trade offer Baltimore can?t refuse.

So Indy is allowed to talk to him? They don't need the Saints permission?

It's no different than two teams trying to trade a player. The team that wants to acquire him doesn't need to talk to the player, they talk to the team that controls him,

Coaches can be traded the same as players, like when Gruden was traded by Oakland to Tampa Bay.

Indy can get a feel for what the Saints want in compensation without ever talking to Payton. In a case involving a coach, it's highly likely that if Indy agreed to the compensation, they would want time to talk to Payton before finalizing a trade, since a coach has options like walking away from coaching to become a commentator.

But in all reality, they don't have to talk to Payton at all. The Saints can deal him, and his coaching rights would belong to someone else.

McDermott, Marrone and Gase are the hot candidates. Payton getting a lot of speculation but the trade price may be limiting.

Is it a 2nd rd pick to get Payton? No chance in hell is he worth that.

I Dunno...a 2nd rounder is valuable, but a GOOD head coach is damn near priceless.

I'm struggling to find any data which nails down the odds of drafting a starter (As in, this player starts at least 1 game with his team) in the 2nd round of an NFL Draft, but my guess is its not incredibly high (like 60% or so??)

I did find a chart which lists the percentage of 2nd round players who are still with their original team after 1-5 years..

Rd YR 1 YR 2 YR 3 YR 4 YR 5
2 96.8% 96.1% 83.9% 74.2% 41.9%

So, after 5 years, there is basically a 60% chance that 2nd Rd pick is no longer on your team at all, yet alone starting or being productive.

Most NFL Coaches dont last 5 years either (hell, most dont last 3 years nowadays), but Sean Payton is not 'most coaches' In my opinion. I would put him in the elite to very good category, behind Belichick, but on par with Carol, McCarthy, Tomlin, Harbaugh (either one) and maybe 2-3 other guys I'm forgetting. Those coaches more than likely will be there well past 5 years, and impact the entire team...they can make every player (in theory) better, whereas a 2nd round pick is just 1 player, who may or may not (prob not) be a big part of your team after a few years...

So, yes - I would trade a 2nd round pick for Sean Payton.

Same here. It's not like the Lions do anything with their 2nd round picks anyways. Seems like most of them are either out of the league or riding the pine.

Nice find. Ya that makes sense...I was looking for % of 2nd round players who ever started a single game, but that article is a much better indication of overall draft 'success'.

So 18%...ya, Id trade those odds of drafting a starter (not even necessarily an Impactful starter) for a top 5 NFL coach.

The article is saying 18% of all starters come from the second round, not that second rounders have an 18% chance of being the starter. Around 50% of all second rounders become starters. Obviously we've been on the wrong end of that.

ya my bad, you're right. I misread the table.

Don't they still have a 2nd round LB that plays like 2 snaps a game?
