This is stupid.

What's stupid? Its a throwing league....get over it. A record that's been standing for 27 years...it's an accomplishment whether you want to believe it or not.

The amount of passing is stupid. The ease of passing is stupid. I can accept that it is what it is and still think it's stupid.
Yes, it's an accoplishment. So is taking your first dump of the day. Look, I like Brees and think he's a damn good quarterback who had an all-time great season (but not the best of 2011 if that says anything), but look at what each quarterback did relative to his peers. Marino had 400 more yards than the 2nd QB in '84 and over a thousand more than 3rd. Brees probably won't be the only QB to break the record this year, and there will be five QB's that will accumulate more than the 2nd best from '84.
None of that means Brees isn't the all time single season leader in passing yardage, or that he didn't accomplish it fairly, I'm just saying that what Brees did this year isn't nearly as impressive. Marino averaged nearly a full yard more per attempt (9.0 vs 8.2). He made his living throwing down the field with DB's draped over his WR's. Brees to a great extent makes his living throwing short passes to WR's spread across the field, feerless of going over the middle since defenders can be suspended if they hit them too hard, while DB's are penalized if they breathe on them after 5 yards. All of those facts of modern football are, to me, stupid.
DR said:Hey, you asked what was stupid, I just wanted to be sure I answered you completely. It seemed special in 1998 when McGwire broke the record, didn't it? Not so much after the fact as Sosa did the same that year and Maris was passed 4 more times over the next few years. Not equating the two, as McGwire & Co. cheated, but outside of the cheating aspect this is undoubtedly the steroid era for passing statistics. To me that makes this accomplishment not as special as it would have been under normal circumstances.
Expelling waste from our body keeps us alive...I praise Tebow every time I take a dump.
