Yu Darvish is considering the possibility of undergoing Tommy John surgery after tests revealed that the Texas Rangers ace has a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow.

The Rangers announced Saturday that Darvish has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Darvish and the Rangers' team doctor have discussed potential treatment options, including ligament reconstructive surgery.

Darvish said in a statement that he plans to seek other medical opinions before making a decision on whether to have surgery.

"I will be disappointed if I have to miss this season, but I want to look at all the options, including getting a second opinion, before I make a final decision," Darvish said in a statement released by the team. "In the meantime, my heart is with my teammates, and our focus remains on accomplishing our goals for the season."

Darvish left his spring training debut Thursday with tightness in his right triceps. The three-time All-Star experienced the pain while warming up in the bullpen and it did not go away over the course of 12 pitches.

I guess its official now... ESPN ticker has it he is opting for surgery..

Makes you appreciate and have more admiration for SPs pre-TJS who more often than not, pitched CGs and 250+ IP back in the day. Now these guys often & quickly blow up their arms, some even before ever making the bigs.

I think the difference is back in the day they didn't go 100% all of the time. Now it seems these guys are using max effort on every pitch putting too much pressure on their arms. Maybe that is why the average FB is higher now than it was back in the day...guys just weren't throwing as hard as they could all of the time. Just a theory.

Makes you appreciate JV.

Yeah, but now he being paid uber-elite money for being merely average and he still has no WS wins or rings...cough...matt stafford...cough...

He had one bad year but even so, JV with a mid 4 ERA or a guy who doesn't play do to TJ surgery?

Not posting that JV doesn't or didn't deserve any accolades and rewards for what he has accomplished and achieved...but these pros are part and parcel to "what have you done for me lately?" like it or not.
