Drafting is one thing.
Developing the players and giving them opportunities to grow are just as important. Now cap management/parity is so important. The exploitation of ELCs is a key which the Red Wings have not been exploiting enough. Instead opting for older, slower, more expensive, and often less skilled talent. Currently Red Wings have one of the WORST cap situations in the league.
Players will only get so good in the AHL.
Just remember the dead wing era were dark times.
Look at the mid 70s to mid 80s.

Also our drafting/development in recent years hasn't been good.
