The main problem right now is that it's too late to lose. Detroit isn't going to swing down 10 spots in the standings over the next few games. The most likely scenario even if they miss is that they will be the LAST team to miss the playoffs. They would have a 3% chance of actually jumping up in the draft. This is compounded further by the fact that there isn't a truly elite defenseman (the team's greatest need) at the top of the draft anyway.
At a very basic level, this team is not in position to blow up. Too many of our players are too young and too important to the future. Selling off Hank, or Kronwall, or Howard doesn't appreciably improve or diminish the team. Blowing up the defense doesn't help because we cant get much worse, and nobody we would want to move has much value.
I want to keep the streak alive because the alternative doesn't make us any better down the line.
