Detroit Lions FA Thread

Golden Tate really does dictate a lot for us right now.

If he's willing to sign a mid-loaded deal, where he makes a little this year (1.5M lets say), more next year (3.5M) a tidy sum in 2016 (7M), and all of that is guaranteed, and then an un-guaranteed year of 7M in 2017, we could fit him into the cap room we have very nicely, and still have the pieces to make a few other moves.

Now, let's assume for a minute we sign Tate today for a deal like that.

We still have the money to pursue a starting safety like Chris Clemons. ($2M this year, three years for $9M overall)

We still have the money to go after a DE to replace Young and push Taylor, like Julius Peppers (3M this year, two years for 7M overall)

We can draft a kid like Gilbert in the first.

I lines things up very nicely for us. With no Tate, we look more like this....

We overpay for a WR like LaFell, who deal from a position of strength knowing we lost out on Tate.

We still have the money for Clemons.

We can't bring in a DE.

We need to make a move in the 1st for Watkins.

We go another year without drafting top secondary help, and continue to be abused by Rodgers, Cutler, etc...

holy shit..pass me that blount...clemans, taye, peppers..really?

Absolutely.

Peppers is on the wrong side of the age barrier, and he's NOT going to get a huge payday with the pass rushers out there.

Clemons' field has been narrowed by the early DB signings. Certainly he has options, but there are fewer.

Tate is going to cost us, but it doesn't have to cost us all in one year.

All three of these guys are likely to sign friendlier deals that pay them more on the mid years as the cap expands. And that is where the Lions are looking to buy, cheap up front, heavier in the mid, un-guaranteed on the back end.

I am not saying we WILL land any of these guys. I am saying that with our current cap space, and where these three guys are sitting, signing all three is POSSIBLE. Not even likely, but possible.

More than anything, those were names used to demonstrate where the Lions could sign prior to the draft if they play their cards right. These are guys who are going to fall into a price range the Lions CAN afford, not saying they won't sign somewhere else, or there isn't another guy the staff prefers.

The biggest question on the list to me is Clemons. Peppers is not going to break the bank for anyone, and Tate already knows he's not a #1 and is looking to make money overall, not all up front.

You forgot one thing, why would they come here? It's a legitimate question. If the money is right I guess you can get anyone but I rather grab a 2 and a slot in the draft than pay Tate a big guarantee. I think Peppers goes to SB contender..

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- While Golden Tate is the big name coming through Detroit on Wednesday, two other players are also scheduled to visit the Lions in the next 48 hours, according to the team's official reporter.

Center Phil Costa, who was released by Dallas, is scheduled to visit the Lions on Wednesday and fullback Henry Hynoski, formerly of the New York Giants, is slated to come in Thursday.

Hynoski played in 23 games for the Giants, mostly as a blocking fullback along with some special teams. In three seasons, he played 545 offensive snaps and gained 158 yards with one touchdown. He missed most of the 2013 season, though, with a fractured shoulder. The 25-year-old also has his own website that has a picture of him hurdling.

Costa, 26, could potentially be viewed as a more veteran replacement for center Dominic Raiola down the road, while also meaning the Lions wouldn't have to draft a center and then work with him to eventually replace Raiola. Costa started every game for Dallas in 2011, but played in just six games over the past two seasons. He had back and ankle injuries that derailed his 2012 season and then was replaced by Travis Frederick in 2013.

Thus, he became an expensive backup on the Cowboys' roster and was released.

The only way Peppers comes here if we severely overpay him. I wouldn't mind Tate but I expect him to want a small fortune.

I think 6 per is a good price for him. He's still very young and made the most of his opportunities on a run first team. He can line up anywhere on the field and play well, so the idea of getting a slot guy or a guy on the outside is still open. Versatile.

But, since he didn't sign anything last night or this morning, I have a feeling we low balled him or wouldn't commit to more than a year or two.

no way in hell do i want Costa... this is the same guy that couldn't snap the ball to Romo in Dallas without causing a fumble. he's 26 and got replaced by a rookie; that should tell you all you need to know about him.

I like Tate. I hope the Lions organization isn't low balling anyone. I forget how much cap room we have but getting Tate would help a ton, grab a CB at 10, WR in the second I'd feel better about things.

Career salvation my friend.

Peppers is looking like an old man. Playing on a line with Suh, Fairley, and Ansah could give him the stats to land another bigger contract in a year or two.

Tate is not seen as a #1. The single coverage he would get opposite Calvin could land him monster stats for his next big payday.

Clemons isn't catching a lot of intertest thus far.

Denver is reminding me of gary payton and karl malone era in LA. "COME HERE! EASY CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Xoxoxo"

Clemons always seems to be around the ball to make the tackle.....but he doesn't make the impact plays like INTS or FFs. Hence, guys like Byrd and TJ ward get the contracts and hes the leftovers. Malcom Jenkins would have been a nice piece cause of the different people he can cover. Safeties went off the board fast.....good ones are hard to come by nowadays in this new pass first era.

mayhew is taking a deliberate approach..im not judging until its over

deliberate is fine...im all for it....day 1 is usually overpaying for a used car based on need. Biggest problem I have is mayhem said the suh deal would be done by now so we could pursue needs in FA. SOOOOooooo....yaaaaaa.......that hasn't happened.
